The Department of Dance at Marymount Manhattan College seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Dance with teaching expertise in ballet to begin fall 2019.

The primary instructional responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to teach all levels of ballet technique, particularly beginning and intermediate levels, pointe, and/or men’s class. Demonstrable emphasis on anatomical knowledge informed by contemporary practices is desirable. Additional duties include mentoring of student work, choreographing/staging work for both the BFA and BA population, participation in student assessment and academic advisement, curriculum development, recruitment activities including attendance at auditions, scholarly/creative activities, college-wide committees, faculty meetings and participation in other teaching and administrative assignments determined in consultation with the department of Dance Chair.

The successful candidate will have a well-established career, including the ability to stage master works, reconstructions and repertory. A preferred candidate will have connections in the dance world that could lead to internship opportunities and community outreach. The ability to teach courses in the college’s Gen Ed program is also highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee curriculum and implementation of all ballet level and courses taught, including acting as the liaison for all co-teachers and adjuncts professors in technique classes
  • Coordinate with ballet faculty for placement and advisement of students in the Ballet courses
  • Keep regular office hours for students, provide mentoring assistance as needed, and perform student advising duties
  • Keep active in academic field of specialization through professional development, scholarly research/choreography, publishing, and professional activities
  • Serve on college and university committees and engage in university and community service, including program/curriculum assessment and the development of outreach activities
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate students in research/choreography projects and internship opportunities
  • Participate in college and university programs to recruit and retain students
  • The typical teaching load for tenure-track faculty is 4/3.


  • M.F.A./M.A. degree in Dance and/or equivalent professional experience and experience in one or more of the following areas: ballet pedagogy in theory and practice, partnering, world dance forms, dance technology, composition, anatomy, original ballet choreography for performances and courses offered to majors/non-majors such as Writing I & II or Advanced Interdisciplinary Perspective (AIP) courses.
  • Undergraduate Degree required.
  • Minimum two years of college level teaching experience
  • Expertise in ballet practices and career involvement with the dance field on a professional level
  • Expertise and professional experience in dance performance practices
  • Demonstrated research and publication/choreography record
  • Potential for or past success securing external grants/research funding
