The Colby College Department of Theater and Dance seeks two new colleagues to innovate with us. Building upon strong traditions and a current campus climate of invention, including bold, new initiatives in the arts and humanities, the Department of Theater and Dance sees exciting potential for innovative curricular redefinition. We will work towards a flexible, integrated curriculum in Contemporary Performance with a focus on original and hybrid performance work that deliberately leverages the resources and ethos of our liberal arts context. That vision hinges on three core values: collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and the merging of theory and praxis. We believe that the best artists think liberally and broadly and engage critically with their own work and with social and political discourses beyond the fields of Dance and Theater.

Teaching responsibilities will include acting, directing, or performance studies; additional teaching responsibilities will defined by the candidate’s strengths, and successful candidates will understand specifically how their work will function within a progressive liberal arts context. While precise area(s) of expertise are open, we especially seek scholars and artists with areas of expertise in original work, hybrid forms. Other areas might include scripting and/or devised performance, immersive performance, multi-media performance, site-specific or community-based performance, contemporary performance theory, and professional practice in any performance-based discipline.

Successful candidates will have a particular investment in the liberal arts context; a record of teaching excellence; evidence of leadership and innovation in the classroom, studio, and/or on stage; active engagement with professional spheres; experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration; and a strong creative and/or scholarly research agenda. We are especially interested in candidates who will promote diversity, inclusion, and equity at Colby through their teaching, research, and service. Candidates must have a terminal degree in their primary research area. The successful candidate should be able to propose bold new ideas, challenge pedagogical assumptions, and collaborate with current faculty and staff to develop and enact a new vision.

Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and close student-faculty interaction. Applicants should submit a 1-2 page cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a concise statement of teaching philosophy including their perspective about how the arts function in the liberal arts context, a concise statement of research interests with video links or writing samples, and three letters of recommendation via Interfolio at the following link,

Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2019 and will continue until the positions are filled.
