Graduate Teaching Assistantship Position
in Elementary Music Education for 2025-2027
The East Texas A&M University School of Music will fill one Graduate Teaching Assistantship position for Elementary General Music.
This assistantship position requires a two-year commitment to a residential master’s program in music, culminating in a Master of Music (Elementary Specialization).
Responsibilities: 20 hours per week of assistance with teaching and administrative aspects of the elementary music program. At times, duties will be assigned outside the elementary music program that are compatible with the strengths of the candidate.
Stipend: $4000.00 per semester. Other benefits include tuition remission (six credit hours in the fall and spring semesters) and eligibility for health benefits.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in music, state teaching certification, and admission to the Graduate School. Teaching experience and technology skills preferred. No GRE is required for admission.
Renewal: Renewal is based on an annual review of the graduate student’s academic performance, performance of assigned duties, needs of the department, and available funds.

Audition: Applicants will submit a short video of themselves working in a classroom with children in lieu of an audition.

About the Master’s Degree: This 30-hour program offers a combination of coursework in music education (13 hours), music history, research, philosophy, and theory (12 hours), and performance study opportunities (2 hours). Students also complete an independent study project on a subject of their choice within the realm of elementary music. Students will be challenged to develop a greater understanding and mastery of the music teaching-learning processes, to improve personal musicianship, and to become leaders within the music education profession.
