Position Overview

The Department of Theatre at the University of Kansas seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor in acting, directing, and performance technique to begin as early as August 18, 2018.

The successful applicant will teach four courses per year in the theatre department, including undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialization; direct in the department’s main-stage season on a regular basis; guide graduate student research; maintain an active program of research in theatre performance and/or studies; maintain an active record as a creative artist both in and outside the academy; and provide service to the department and the university, including advising, committee work, and contributing to the growth of the Department of Theatre.

Job Description

Teaching (40%)
Teach four courses per year, including undergraduate and graduate courses as needed.
Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, faculty member must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week, one day a week.
Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. Be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
Adhere to program, College, and University policies.
All faculty members are expected to be active in advising. All faculty members are to take their teaching and advising responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom.
Research (40%)
The Department of Theatre seeks to maintain a national profile in quality of faculty research. Each faculty member contributes to this goal by maintaining an active and sustainable program of creative and/or traditional research
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scholarly and/or creative outlets.
Present papers and/or workshops at professional conferences.
Service (20%)
Provide service to the Theatre Department, College, and University through committee work and campus initiatives, and contribute to the growth of the Department of Theatre.
Provide service to the discipline(s) through participation in professional and/or scholarly organizations appropriate to area of specialization.

Appointment.
For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, the candidate must meet or exceed KU standards for research, teaching, and service at that rank.

Collegiality.
All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

Required Qualifications

MFA or PhD in theatre, performance studies or closely-related field by start date of appointment.
Evidence of excellence in directing for the stage.
Demonstrated ability to teach one or more introductory and advanced acting/performance techniques at the university, college or studio level.
Clearly articulated program of creative and/or traditional research.
Demonstrated additional area of expertise. Examples may include, but are not limited to: non-western performance, physical theatre, devised theatre, fight choreography, voice, acting for the camera, community-based theatre, digital/media performance.
