Job Description

The Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture (RRSLA) at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The school seeks candidates with expertise in design foundations, grading and stormwater management, building information modeling, and/or research. Teaching responsibilities will include instruction in the professional Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) programs. Successful candidates would be expected to teach studios and core courses, review design projects, advise undergraduate and graduate research, and contribute to curricular development. We seek colleagues who will contribute to RRSLA’s legacy of excellence in design education and advance the discipline through cutting edge research.

Context

LSU is located in Baton Rouge, the state’s capital, and is Louisiana’s flagship university. LSU has a beautiful campus with more than 1300 live oaks and is one of the few universities with land-, sea-, and space-grant status. Our rich multicultural location on the Lower Mississippi River near the Atchafalaya River Basin and the Gulf of Mexico provides many opportunities for innovative studio investigations, scholarly activities, and funded projects in landscape architecture.

RRSLA is committed to expanding excellence in landscape architectural education through critical thinking, iterative making, innovation, and theory rooted in the context of the American South. The school is known for its blend of critical, creative, and technical expertise. We are located within LSU's College of Art and Design and offer BLA and MLA degrees. The college also offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, art history, studio art, and interior design and an interdisciplinary Doctor of Design degree. Our school believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion enrich the educational experience of our students, faculty, and staff, and are necessary to prepare all people to thrive personally and professionally in a global society. RRSLA aims to attract and support a diverse faculty and student body.

Opportunities

College resources include an arboretum, a fabrication lab, a woodshop, computer labs, and technology including robots, drones, 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and virtual reality headsets. LSU's Hilltop Arboretum is a 14-acre laboratory with native plants, a nursery, and extensive community programming. There are opportunities for interdisciplinary research and teaching through LSU’s Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio, which brings together scientists, engineers, and designers to develop nature-based solutions to storms and flooding. The school offers many opportunities for off-campus experiences for students including internships and both domestic and international field trips. The school also maintains an extensive and loyal alumni network that generously support the school’s academic programs and help our graduates find internships and jobs.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a record of excellence in research, creative work, or professional practice in landscape architecture. They must have at least one degree in landscape architecture and a terminal degree in landscape architecture or an allied discipline. A doctoral degree and/or professional licensure are preferred, but not required. The school welcomes applicants with expertise in any aspect of landscape architecture, but preference will be given to those with expertise in design foundations, grading and stormwater management, building information modeling, or research. Candidates should have teaching experience and a clearly defined research agenda.

 Special Instructions

Please provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, diversity statement, and list of at least three professional references including name, title, phone number, and e-mail address through the university’s online application portal. Please send a digital version of your teaching and design portfolio to the chair of the search committee. Copies of your transcripts may be attached to your application; however, original transcripts are required prior to hire.

Evaluation of candidates will begin December 1, 2024, and the positions will remain open until filled. Salary and rank are dependent on qualifications and experience. All submissions will remain confidential until selection for on-campus interviews. For more information, please contact Brent Fortenberry, the interim director, at brfort@lsu.edu or Brendan Harmon, the chair of the search committee, at baharmon@lsu.edu.
