Visiting Assistant Professor, Illustration & Animation
Design

Position Overview

The School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas is looking for an outstanding colleague to join us as a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor in the Illustration & Animation program. We offer the opportunity to work with award-winning students and nationally recognized faculty in a collegial, collaborative and energetic environment.

The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in both traditional and digital illustration and animation with an ability to conceptualize, develop characters and create visual stories with meaning. The candidate must demonstrate skill levels in perspective drawing, figure drawing, expressive gesture drawing and painting, and creative mark making. The candidate will be teaching a diverse cross section of students from the freshmen level drawing courses to advanced senior level illustration and concept art courses. Traditional illustration modes as well as concept art modes related to film, animation and video game arena are included in the curriculum. The candidate will work closely in the development and implementation of curriculum with other area faculty as well as maintain an active research profile. Special consideration will be given to applicants committed to excellence who can contribute to the University’s innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary initiatives.

Exceptional candidates will additionally have a MFA in Illustration or related areas and two to three years professional experience in illustration or related areas. They will have a documented record of research and/or teaching activity with an emphasis on illustration, and be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the illustration field, its varied media techniques, technologies and approaches, and be conversant with current professional practice standards. The responsibilities of the position include teaching courses in Illustration and Animation area, as well as courses open to all other majors. Advising and instructing at the undergraduate level. Participating in the planning and integration of existing and new course work and technologies in the Illustration & Animation are undergraduate program. As well as participating in some departmental committee work.

Job Description

40% Teaching: The teaching duties will typically support the area as well as the Department of Design. Normally this will include teaching five courses per year. Performance expectations for excellence in teaching may include: leadership in the development of course content, new curricular initiatives, study abroad programs and instructional activity consistent with the evolving mission of the university, school, and department. Effective communication(s) in the classroom (may be identified) through well-prepared lectures, demonstrations, syllabi and assignments; useful and informative critiques and evaluation systems; effective use of collateral resources (libraries, internet, technology labs, studio equipment); content coordination with contiguous courses; quality input into instructional content that serves the mission of the department and the university.

40% Research/Creative Activity: The individual in this position is expected to engage in a program of research making contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of design.

20% Service: Service is an important responsibility of all faculty members that contributes to the University’s performance of its larger mission. Although the nature of service activities will depend on a candidate’s particular interests and abilities, service contributions are an essential part of being a good citizen of the University.

Required Qualifications

MFA, MA or equivalent degree.
Teaching experience in traditional, experimental and/or digital illustration.
