Who we are

Music is located in the Department of Music, Theatre and Performing Arts and offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in music performance, composition, ethnomusicology and musicology, studio production and music technology, and music and theatre. Voice has long been an extremely important part of Otago’s Music programme: its many distinguished graduates include winners and place-getters in the nation’s leading vocal contests, and singers pursuing international careers as opera and concert performers.

Over the years, the focus on voice has expanded considerably with the introduction of, first, rock and pop vocals and, more recently, musical theatre voice. Therefore, classical voice is fundamental not only to the classical music programme, but also to the teaching of singing per se. It builds synergies between the various voice streams.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint either a permanent, full-time (confirmation path) Lecturer in Music (Voice) OR a Professional Practice Fellow in Music (Voice) at full-time or part-time hours. Appointment will be made depending on skills and experience.

The position provides the opportunity to work within a strong and forward-looking department dedicated to excellence in music, theatre, dance and performing arts education. In this role, you will undertake performance and teaching primarily in the area of vocal music performance and teach other departmental courses including summer school where needed. You will also be required to perform with colleagues and visiting performers.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Department intends to establish a university choir, which the successful candidate will be expected to organise and/or direct.

As a Lecturer you will also be expected to actively engage in research, which may include and be largely focused on performance per se and Performance-as-Research. You will be actively involved in the recruitment of new students and in applying for and receiving external research funding.

You will be expected to have:

  • Doctoral degree (DMA or PhD) or equivalent, and therefore be eligible to supervise postgraduate students.
  • Significant profile as a current performer.
  • Relevant vocal teaching experience.

Professional Practice Fellow:

As a Professional Practice Fellow you will undertake your duties under the overall supervision of the co-coordinator of the classical music performance programme. We are open to the possibility of the position being shared between two people.

You will be expected to have:

  • Masters degree (MMus or MA), or equivalent.
  • Significant profile as a current performer.
  • Relevant vocal teaching experience and professional qualification, and therefore be eligible to participate in the supervision of all postgraduate students.

Further Details

The salary range for a Lecturer is $78,445 to $93,821 per annum and for a Professional Practice Fellow is $59,386 to $113,519 per annum (pro rata). Appointment will be made at an appropriate step in these ranges depending on qualifications and experience.
