Visiting Assistant Professor in Voice and Speech

Position Description: The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the search for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice and Speech. With a beginning date of August 16, 2017.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have experience in voice and speech for theatrical productions and experience teaching at the university level. MFA or terminal degree required. Special consideration given to those with experience in Theatre, Dance, and/or Opera. The position requires mentorship of BFA and MFA students in class and in production. Experience with curriculum development and academic leadership is desirable. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Tier One Research Institution. Salary commensurate with experience. Minimum Qualifications: 1) Terminal degree required. 2) Teaching in voice and speech experience required (AEA membership preferred). 3) Expertise in speech and IPA, accents/dialects, voice over, advanced text and styles, and one or more recognized vocal production approaches. 4) Effective organizational and communication skills. 5) Must possess an ability to collaborate effectively in teams and to draw the creative best out of any team. 6) Understanding the voice and speech needs in all of the performing arts.

Duties: Teach major courses in BFA and MFA acting and engage in curriculum development, recruitment, artistic mentoring, and academic advising. Responsibilities include teaching voice and speech and related courses; advising and mentoring students in acting; committee and service work; vocal and dialect coaching for Illinois Theatre productions. Ongoing external research/creative activity is expected.

Rank and Salary: Visiting Assistant Professor, full-time position. Salary commensurate with experience. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Theatre.

Department: The Department of Theatre includes 18 faculty members, 12 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 4 academic staff, 6 campus affiliated faculty members, 115 undergraduates and more than 60 graduate students. The department offers BFA and MFA programs in acting; theatre studies; and design, technology and management. There are also MA and PhD programs in theatre studies. The department and its production programs are housed in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, a state of the art, multi-venue facility that operates collaboratively within an artistic structure comprised of theatre, dance, music, opera, and professional touring performances. Theatre faculty members work closely with Krannert Center staff and the faculties of the Department of Dance and the School of Music’s Lyric Theatre Program.
