The Union College Department of Theatre and Dance in Schenectady, New York invites applications for a Technical Director/Lighting and Sound Supervisor at the rank of Lecturer to begin Fall of 2019. Lecturers at Union College are faculty members whose principal responsibilities are instructional and curricular, and which involve departmental or college service with no requirements for scholarship. Union employs a trimester system, and the normal teaching load is two courses per term. This position receives one course release per term for production duties and is a is a full-time 10 month contract that can be renewed after the initial 3 years of service.

The ideal candidate will hold an MFA in Technical Direction. Comparable degrees with significant experience in professional theatre or at institutes of higher education will be considered. The Technical Director will work alongside a full time Lecturer of Scenic Design and a part time Assistant Shop Foreman to accomplish duties including: 1) maintaining scene shop equipment, production stock, properties, lighting, sound, video equipment in 1 mainstage (160 seat black box) theatre and 3 studio/performance spaces; 2) budgeting and purchasing of production equipment and supplies; 3) supervision and training of technical work-study and practicum students; 4) supervision of all aspects of scenic construction, as well as lighting, sound, and video equipment installation, 5) operation for all faculty theater and dance productions; 6) teaching courses in Introduction to Stage Craft, Stage Management, Welding, and Advanced Stage Craft, 6) performing appropriate service to department and College.

Qualifications include: 1) ability to communicate and work in a collaborative theatrical production environment; 2) knowledge of OSHA rules and ability to ensure proper implementation of safety regulations; 3) strong construction, drafting, and computer skills; 4) rigging and welding skills; 5) thorough working knowledge of contemporary light, sound, and video technologies 6) the strength and stamina to lift and carry 50 pounds, and 7) the ability to train a very diverse student population in these skills. The candidate should have familiarity with production management, stage management, lighting and sound design. Candidates with the ability and desire to act as Lighting and/or Sound Designer for Department productions are preferred, as is experience teaching in higher education.
