The Art & Design Department at Utah Valley University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Sculpture to begin August 2019. We seek to attract visionary and innovative faculty to contribute to the sculptural track within the Sculpture/Ceramics area. The program is designed to lay a solid foundation of basic skills and concepts, foster critical thinking, and inspire creative diversity. This position will teach sculpture courses as well as 3D Design courses, maintain/manage sculpture lab spaces, assist and mentor students, contribute to the BFA program by advising BFA students, and maintain an active program of creative activity. Candidates must be able to instruct in all aspects of sculpture while maintaining an emphasis on a materials intensive approach to the mediums that integrate various styles from a historical and contemporary discourse. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, as well as to teaching diverse learners and modeling inclusive practices.

UVU, located in Orem, Utah, is a comprehensive state institution of higher education with over 37,000 students. Orem is on the western front of the Wasatch Mountains and offers access to numerous outdoor activities including snow sports, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting. The Wasatch Front metropolitan area offers rich cultural opportunities in the arts including the Sundance film festival and world-class music and dance companies. The UVU campus is served by a wonderful public transit system, including a rail line that runs along the entire Wasatch Front urban corridor. Required Qualifications:

Graduation by the time of hire from an accredited institution with an earned MFA in Sculpture or a related field required. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in sculptural practices, theory, and history
  • Knowledge in the elements and principles of 3-dimensional design
  • Knowledge in contemporary sculpture
  • Knowledge in sculpture studio practices and/or management
  • Knowledge in student management, motivation and evaluation techniques
  • Skills in teaching sculpture, 3D Design, and related practices
  • Skills in a diverse range of traditional 3D processes and mediums
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Skills in interpersonal relationships, problem-solving and decision-making
  • Ability to maintain classroom management with a diverse student body
  • Ability to communicate processes and techniques using the language of 3D practices
  • Ability to evaluate student work effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply appropriate technology in classroom teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in a diverse range of traditional 3D processes and mediums preferred. National and/or international exhibition record. Two years teaching experience at the university or college level in sculpture and/or 3D foundations desired.

Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/lab/office work environment. Lifting up to 25 lbs.

Pay Range: $55,000 - $58,000 DOQ
