Wesleyan University’s Department of Theater invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Directing.

The Theater Department is recruiting artists-teachers with an extensive and proven record of directorial excellence. Candidates whose professional engagement as a director informs their teaching and creative practice are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be a highly creative, intellectually curious artist-scholar who emphasizes the directorial process and brings an intercultural, interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to theater practice and scholarship. The Department situates artistic practice, pedagogy and research in an undergraduate liberal arts context and explores theater from an intersectional perspective in which both rigorous scholarship and applied creative practice are emphasized by continuous and collaborative exchange.

The Department produces classical and contemporary plays, adaptations of literary works for the stage, as well as movement and visually based performances. The Department’s faculty encourages and values diversity within their teaching and artistic/scholarly practices, and is committed to ongoing curricular and programmatic development in intercultural, interdisciplinary and collaborative theatrical innovation. The candidate’s areas of inquiry may include, but are not limited to, race, gender, ethnicity, intersectionality, sexuality, African-American, Asian-American, Native, Queer or Latinx studies. We seek candidates whose pursuit of artistic excellence, innovative vision and creative energy will enable effective leadership within a highly committed and vibrant community of students, teachers, artists and scholars in Wesleyan’s Theater Department, the Center for the Arts, and across the University.

The successful candidate will direct one or two productions each year in addition to teaching beginning and advanced directing courses and other performance courses as needed for a two/ two load. Other responsibilities include supervising tutorials, mentoring students’ creative work, and advising majors and pre-majors; developing a roster of potential per course Visiting Faculty; initiating and evaluating student internships and residencies; collaborating with the Center for the Arts in hosting performance workshops; and leading interdisciplinary inquiry into performance practices. Developing a research agenda as an artist/scholar is necessary for promotion. Participation in faculty governance of the Department and the University is expected.

The minimum degree requirement is an MFA or a terminal degree in theater or related discipline. Candidates should also have teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

You will be asked to upload electronic versions of the items we require as follows: 1) cover letter indicating directorial expertise and potential course offerings; 2) curriculum vita; 3) two-page statement of teaching philosophy (600 words maximum) in which you address teaching students from diverse backgrounds; 4) an annotated summary of creative work; and 5) one sample syllabus for a beginning directing course and one for an advanced directing course.

You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three references from whom we may obtain confidential letters of recommendation. (Please double-check the accuracy of the email addresses of the referees you name to insure that you have up-to-date email addresses for each.) After you have submitted all of the required documents, you will see a confirmation number. At that point, each of the three referees whose email address you have provided will receive an automatically generated email requesting that he or she submit for you a letter of reference.

Applications should be submitted online no later than January 1, 2019 at http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/6585.
