Dean, Hillier College of Architecture and Design

Department:

Hillier College of Architecture and Design

Reports To:
Provost and Senior Vice President

Position Type:
Executive

Overview:
One of the nation's leading public polytechnic universities, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a visionary, inclusive, and strategic leader as its next dean of the Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD). Reporting directly to Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, John A. Pelesko, Ph.D. the dean serves as the principal academic and administrative officer of HCAD. Nominations are invited and can be sent to NJITDeanSearch@njit.edu.

NJIT is one of only 35 polytechnic universities in the United States, and one of only 131 universities rated at the highest, "R1" level of research activity by the Carnegie Classification. Its research and teaching activities have a $2.8 billion annual economic impact on the State of New Jersey, and its six colleges prepare students to become leaders in today's technology-dependent economy. Diversity is a core value of NJIT and the university has earned several distinctions, including being a Minority Serving Institution, Hispanic-Serving Institution and Asian-American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution. NJIT is also the second highest ranked public university in the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2024 list of the Best Colleges in the United States. Further fortifying NJIT's position as a university with one of the highest returns on investment, is its standing as the highest ranked public school in New Jersey for net-price value ten years post-graduation by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, the fourteenth "Best College" by Money, among the top 2% for alumni mid-career earnings by PayScale, and the 33rd most highly ranked "Best Value College" by The Princeton Review.

NJIT is a regional leader in scientific, technical, and professional education, offering New Jersey's only Bachelor of Architecture degree and educating more engineers and computer scientists than any other university in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area. NJIT was ranked the top university in the nation by Forbes for enabling its lowest-income students to achieve upward economic mobility. In recent years, the university has received accolades from national publications for alumni-earning potential, education of underrepresented minorities in STEM, education of veterans, and a variety of top-ranked industry-relevant academic programs. With a clear dedication to access, a demonstrated return on investment for students, and a commitment to local and global impact through world-class research and curriculum, NJIT is a leading example of the ideals of public higher education.d

Position Summary:
The second oldest of the six colleges at NJIT, HCAD comprises the School of Architecture and the School of Art and Design. The College has over 1,000 enrolled students and a robust and engaged alumni community, and just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the New Jersey School of Architecture and the fifteenth anniversary of the School of Art and Design. HCAD offers undergraduate programs in Digital Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and two undergraduate programs in architecture-a four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S.Arch.) and a five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degree leading to licensure. NJIT is the only university in New Jersey to offer a B.Arch. At the graduate level, the College offers a professional Master of Architecture leading to licensure (M.Arch.), a post-professional Master of Science in architecture (M.S.Arch.), a Master in Urban Design (M.U.D), and (jointly with Rutgers University) a Ph.D. in Urban Systems.

HCAD faculty engage in a broad range of scholarly and creative work as well as in research. The Hillier College is home to two multi-million dollar, externally funded research Centers - the Center for Building Knowledge and the Center for Community Systems which employ a total of almost 20 full-time researchers. Research topics include: nanomaterials; sustainable and resilient design of buildings, civil infrastructure, and communities; history; brownfields redevelopment; and community revitalization. With their emphasis on interdisciplinary technological applications to design, both schools build on the strengths of an R1 research university while preparing students to succeed as practitioners, scholars, and researchers. In the last decade, NJIT has experienced remarkable growth in its national and international reputation, the levels of funded research conducted, and the size of its student population. Students and faculty alike benefit from the university's proximity to New York City, and our location in Newark provides opportunities to work and study in a city that is rapidly transforming. HCAD enjoys unique opportunities for public and private partnerships to innovate urban design for the coming century.

The dean should offer a vision for the future of architecture and design education considering the potential for pedagogy and practice of the advanced and emerging technologies at the center of a polytechnic university, and building on HCAD's history as a leader in the integration of technology and research into architecture and design. The dean will lead a faculty with a wide range of interdisciplinary research interests but shared strengths in technology; sustainability; community engagement; and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. The dean will aim to elevate the College to new levels of excellence in architecture design as a cultural endeavor, as a way of thinking and making, and as a field of knowledge. As enrollment and market demands for technical training continue to grow across all disciplines, NJIT seeks a leader who can think creatively, innovatively, and boldly to chart a forward-looking path for HCAD that better positions our undergraduate and graduate students for successful careers.

As NJIT continues to grow, it is implementing a new strategic plan for 2030, focusing on innovating curricula that bolster the success of all students; strengthening our faculty and empowering them to succeed in the classroom; expanding our research enterprise and seeking entrepreneurial opportunities; and building partnerships that strengthen our local and national communities through the creation of deep, equitable and sustainable economic growth. The dean will need to carry that mission forward through ongoing curricular and structural changes in the Hillier College. The dean will also have the opportunity to implement a decentralized budget model that incentivizes growth and innovation within HCAD. The dean will also lead development initiatives and must have a demonstrated ability to champion such efforts successfully.

Essential Functions:
As the College's chief executive officer, and part of the university's senior leadership, the dean is responsible for strengthening academic offerings, for ensuring the scholarly, research and creative productivity of the faculty, for managing and developing the resources of HCAD through its budget and external outreach, and for connecting with stakeholders on and off campus. The dean is expected to collaboratively develop a new strategic plan for the College that strengthens the global reputation of HCAD and to integrate it into the university's 2030 strategic plan. The dean is responsible for leading student recruitment, nationally and internationally, growing enrollment, coordinating development of the curriculum, and leading the processes necessary to maintain accreditation of the College's professional program. The dean supports funded research and educational projects and creates and maintains close ties with the profession, funding agencies, industry, and other partners.

The dean will be a highly engaged, collaborative, and accessible leader, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, fostering a synergetic culture among HCAD faculty and students, the campus community, alumni, local and state governments, and various other civic and industrial partners.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
- A distinguished record in scholarship, research, and/or professional practice in architecture, design, or a related field that is commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Full Professor with academic tenure in HCAD;
- Earned a university degree at the graduate level that is the highest on their field's academic or professional track;
- Experience in developing and pursuing a strategic vision of innovation and a proven record of communicating the vision of architecture and design in a compelling way to internal and external constituents;
- A proven record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within an organization and a strong commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and the desire and ability to embed these values into the fabric of the College;
- A record of creating partnerships with business, community, and/or alumni partners;
- An accomplished demonstrated record of design and / or technology-based curricular innovation;
- An extensive record of supporting student success;
- An understanding of the accreditation processes in architecture and design;
- A significant record of administrative advancement and leadership, collaboratively managing a diverse team;
- Experience managing staff; ability to work with and through a team; delegating and effecting results through others; providing professional development and opportunities for career advancement; the desire to create a work environment that positions individuals and teams to excel and be creative;
- A demonstrated record of advancement and development and growing institutional resources;
- An astute understanding of managing finances, developing resources and the relationship between academic priorities, budgeting, and development;
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Evidence of interdisciplinary professional work or research;
- Extensive experience with conducting or facilitating funded research and managing a diverse and research active faculty;
- Ph.D. or professional licensure;
- Experience leading accreditation processes in architecture and design education;
- Experience in managing a decentralized budget;
- The ability to anticipate future trends and capitalize on them for the benefit of the college and NJIT.
