The Department of Art & Art History at the University of Missouri St. Louis invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position within the Graphic Design program, commencing fall of 2017. This is a non-tenure-track, 9-month full-time position, renewable.
The BFA in Graphic Design is a progressive and well-established program housed within the College of Arts and Sciences. The program is comprised of more than 90 students and is the largest of six BFA programs offered by the School of Fine & Performing Arts. The program seeks a graphic designer and educator who will bring exceptional visual and critical abilities to a strong graphic design department with a reputation for offering teaching excellence at an urban campus serving motivated students from diverse backgrounds.
The graphic design program’s rigorous curriculum encourages students to explore traditional and emerging media across disciplines of art and design. The ideal candidate would excel in the foundational principles and formal methodologies of graphic design, engage innovative teaching methods, and inspire students to become design leaders. The candidate would teach three courses per semester (a range from introductory to advanced undergraduate courses) and would actively participate in the service of the department and the institution. The successful candidate must have demonstrated teaching experience, and have attained professional achievement in graphic design. Minimum / Required
MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Graphic Design or closely related field by contract start date
Proficiency with HTML and CSS
Strength in teaching design/concept/typography
Preferred / Desired
Professional design experience
Familiarity with user-centered design concepts; Experience designing for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices
Alternately, strength in Animation/3-d a plus
Teach 3 studio courses each semester, that may include beginning, intermediate and advanced Graphic Design and Interactive Media classes, as well as other studio classes that support the major.
Contribute to a rigorous learning environment using traditional, alternative and digital delivery methods
Demonstrate organizational skills, collegiality and potential for future leadership in the design program
Collaborate with faculty to maintain / develop course curricula
Provide academic advisement for students
Perform service to the department, college and university
Perform other duties as designated by Chair
