Job Description Summary

The Department of Theatre & Dance at Auburn University invites applications for an appointment as Professor of Practice of Musical Theatre Voice, beginning in the fall of 2024.
 
This is a nine-month, non-tenure track, full-time teaching faculty position in the AU musical theatre BFA program. The position may be renewed annually by mutual agreement based on the availability of funds, the need for services, and satisfactory performance. This position is essential to the operation of our department and production season. The successful candidate will join the faculty of a strong B.A./B.F.A, National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) accredited, undergraduate department within the College of Liberal Arts.

Responsibilities include teaching applied voice lessons (10-15 students each semester), teaching a class in music reading fundamentals for theatre artists, teaching a class in music theory fundamentals for musical theatre singers, co-teaching a class in singing fundamentals for theatre artists, and active participation in the production season as a vocal director.
 

Minimum Qualifications

This Professor of Practice appointment requires a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the time employment begins and prior collegiate teaching experience in applied voice lessons for musical theatre.

The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the U.S. at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

A Doctor of Musical Arts degree (or PhD) from an accredited institution in Vocal Performance, Voice Pedagogy, or a related field at the time employment begins, and expertise in musical theatre or contemporary commercial voice pedagogy are desired. Prior experience teaching music theory to musical theatre singers and evidence of continuing education, such as certification in Somatic Voicework™ or The LoVetri Method are desired. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a vocal director or music director in a collegiate musical theatre production setting. Documented excellence in teaching, and/or other demonstrated competencies and achievements that contribute to effective teaching and student learning outcomes are desired. The ideal candidate must have a desire to be an active member of the creative production team as well as an excellent collaborative communicator willing to contribute to the mission of the department.

With approximately 100 majors, the Department of Theatre and Dance offers a B.A. in theatre as well as B.F.A degrees in performance, musical theatre, design & technology, and management. The department is housed in a dedicated theatre facility including a 340-seat house with proscenium/thrust stage, a black box performance space, studio theatre, design studio, fully equipped shops, a dance/movement studio, a vocal studio, a smart classroom, and a computer lab.
