The School of Architecture at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UH Manoa) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in Fall 2025. Position duties include teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels; research, professional practice, and/or creative work; and service. The School seeks a faculty member in architecture, who can teach and conduct research/professional practice in the following fields:
(1) Teach studio courses in which students propose innovative architectural/urban designs for moderately complex buildings and sites. Draw upon professional practice experience with design development and construction document phases.
(2) Ensure the compliance of the proposed design solutions with building and planning codes.
(3) Teach studio courses in which students integrate building systems in architectural design development drawings, and construction documents. Systems include structure, building envelope, and MEP.

The School of Architecture offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEnvD) degree, a professional Master of Landscape Architecture degree (MLA), a professional Master of Architecture (MArch), and a NAAB-accredited professional Doctor of Architecture (DArch) degree. Ample opportunities exist for robust interdisciplinary research collaboration with faculty from Engineering, Natural Sciences, Urban Planning, and other disciplines.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
This full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor includes responsibilities for teaching, research, creative work, thesis advising and service. The School of Architecture seeks candidates who can help advance and strengthen the curriculum and focus of the BEnvD, MLA, MArch, and DArch programs. Within the required specialization in architecture, desired expertise includes but is not limited to design research, professional and critical practice of architecture. The school seeks candidates who will complement the skills of the faculty at the School of Architecture and provide research and teaching integrating advanced application of building materials, systems, and technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of a professional degree in architecture (BArch, MArch, DArch). If a candidate holds a BArch, a master’s degree in architecture or related field is required. 
  • A professional license to practice architecture within the United States or in the countries that have reciprocity with NCARB.
  • Five years minimum documented record of professional practice involved in all stages of design and construction administration. 
  • The ability to maintain a vigorous program of research, professional practice, and/or creative work.
  • The ability to demonstrate teaching excellence.

Desired Qualifications:
The school especially welcomes candidates with:

  • Additional professional, post-professional, or PhD degree(s) 
  • Ability to establish strong collaborative connections to professional architecture firms nationally and globally.
  • A body of recognized built work and/or peer reviewed scholarship in areas relevant to architecture, building systems, and urban design.
  • Advanced experience in comprehensive building design. 
  • Experience in professional practice at the level of studio leader, partner, or owner.
  • Experience and aptitude for administrative academic service. 
  • Experience developing undergraduate and graduate studios, advanced graduate courses, and other integrated curricula that connects practice to education.

Salary range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
