Position Overview

The School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas is looking for an outstanding colleague to join us as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design. Successful applicants will have a terminal degree (MFA, MDes…) with research and/or client based projects in the area of Interaction Design. The Department seeks an active and open-minded design thinker and maker who will embrace working with both Visual Communication Design and Industrial Design programs. A candidate with an active research program, teaching experience, curriculum development and professional experience will distinguish applicants.

The preferred candidate has experience in at least three of the following areas:
Interaction Design
UI /UX Design for Web and Mobile
Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design
User Experience Design
Human Centered Design
Design Entrepreneurship
Environmental Design
Virtual/Augmented Reality
Wearable Technology
Prior teaching at the college or university level
Knowledge of the IoT (Internet of Things) and the role technology plays in today’s product and service design

Candidates should have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and collaborative environment. Research in issues related to interaction design with external research grants will be noted. Opened in 1866, the University of Kansas is a comprehensive educational and research institution with 29,272 students and more than 2,100 faculty members. KU’s main Lawrence campus is approximately 40 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri home to vital cultural and business communities with an array of nationally recognized visual and preforming arts venues. The Department of Design offers undergraduate areas of study in Industrial Design, Illustration & Animation, Photography and Visual Communication. And two MA degrees in Interaction Design and Design Management.

Job Description

40% Teaching: The teaching duties will typically support the area as well as the Department of Design. Normally this will include teaching four courses per year. Performance expectations for excellence in teaching may include: leadership in the development of course content, new curricular initiatives, study abroad programs and instructional activity consistent with the evolving mission of the university, school, and department. Effective communication(s) in the classroom (may be identified) through well-prepared lectures, demonstrations, syllabi and assignments; useful and informative critiques and evaluation systems; effective use of collateral resources (libraries, internet, technology labs, studio equipment); content coordination with contiguous courses; quality input into instructional content that serves the mission of the department and the university.

40% Research/Creative Activity: The individual in this position is expected to engage in a program of research making contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of design. Creative/Professional activities within the Department of Design cross broad major disciplines including industrial design, interaction design, visual communication design, and design management. Creative and professional work by designers may include design for products and their production, analyzes of systems relating to users’ needs, communication venues in publication (digitally/electronically), exhibitions, workshops and competitions. Scholarly output would include publication of papers, books, presentations and published conference papers.

20% Service: Service is an important responsibility of all faculty members that contributes to the University’s performance of its larger mission. Although the nature of service activities will depend on a candidate’s particular interests and abilities, service contributions are an essential part of being a good citizen of the University. Service includes: involvement in national, University, and School committees that contribute to the faculty member’s academic and/or professional discipline. And participation through presentations, editorial boards, grant review boards and/ or active membership in service organizations that help to disseminate new knowledge in the faculty member’s academic and/or professional discipline.

Required Qualifications

MFA or MDes in interaction design and/or visual communication design or a terminal degree in an appropriate related field.
Current professional practice in the fields of interaction design and/or visual communication design and/or a record of scholarly creative work.
