Interior Architecture, Design + Practice
The Interior Architecture Program seeks a creative and innovative faculty member for a full-time tenure-track position in design and practice. We seek applicants who can contribute to our design studio curriculum while bringing expertise to required courses and advanced electives/seminars that connect theory and practice. The position is anticipated to be at the rank of assistant professor. The appointment is anticipated to begin September 2018.

Responsibilities
Research and Creative Work: Candidates are expected to pursue a well-defined research and/or creative practice agenda with a commitment to interior design. The program is committed to investigating multi-faceted problems and furthering knowledge by researching issues and processes that give form and meaning to the environment.
Teaching: The teaching responsibilities of the position include design studios, lecture courses, and advanced seminar courses that contribute to professional programs in Interior Architecture. We seek candidates who can connect design studio theory/process and emerging issues in design with required professional coursework.

Qualifications
1. Candidates must hold a professional degree in interior design or architecture and a graduate degree that may be in interior design, architecture, art history or an allied field.
2. Candidates must exhibit the capacity to develop a successful record of publication of research and/or creative/professional work.
3. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • A professional degree in Interior Architecture/Interior Design
  • NCIDQ certification or who qualify for certification.
  • A record of successful publication of research and/or creative/professional work.
  • A record of successful previous teaching experience in interior design/architecture * Experience in interior design practice.

Institutional Context
The Interior Architecture program resides in the School of Architecture and Environment which is one of three schools in the U of O College of Design. The School of Architecture and Environment includes professional programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture and Historic Preservation. We are an energetic diverse design community that cares deeply about teaching, learning and supporting new research and practice that make a positive contribution to the fields of architecture and interior design. The school is committed to furthering knowledge by researching issues and processes that impact the designed environment.

The Interior Architecture program has five full-time faculty positions and approximately eighty-five students. Design studio is at the core of our five-year undergraduate curriculum and parallel professional graduate program. All faculty provide leadership in design studios based on their expertise and interests. Mid-level vertical design studios mix student cohorts and allow faculty members to develop a wide range of studio projects. In addition to design studio teaching, we seek a faculty member who can contribute expertise to required curricular content in a specific area that may include construction/materials, systems integration, sustainable practices, emerging design process/media and/or other areas of contemporary practice. All faculty have the opportunity to share expertise and research interests in teaching advanced electives.

We operate in conjunction with programs in Architecture which include about 400 undergraduate and 200 graduate students, thirty full-time faculty, a varied pool of career instructors, Pro Tempore and visiting faculty. Accredited B.Arch and M.Arch degrees are offered in addition to research-based M.S. degrees in both Architecture and Interior Architecture, and a PhD in Architecture with a focus on sustainable design.

Located 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon has an enrollment of 25,000. The Eugene metro area (pop. 215,000) is in a region noted for its dynamic quality of life and progressive cultural environment. We are about an hour’s drive from the Pacific coast and the Cascade mountains. The University is an AAU research institution and a member of the Pac-12 conference.
