The Director of Instrumental Activities is a full-time, nine-month non-tenure-track position. The Director conducts the Occidental Symphony Orchestra, teaches instrumental conducting, coaches chamber ensembles and individual instrumentalists, and oversees and administers the entire instrumental music program, including all the instrumental ensembles, their directors, and all of the instrumental applied instructors.

1. Conduct the Occidental Symphony Orchestra, which is comprised of students as well as community members. Recruit and retain student instrumentalists for the orchestra. Cultivate working relationships with local instrumental ensembles and instrumentalists.
2. Supervise the chamber music program and its coaches. Attend all chamber music events.
3. Teach a two-unit instrumental conducting class.
4. Work with the Composition faculty to see that student composers have their music performed by student
instrumentalists and (when appropriate) departmental ensembles.
5. Recruit current and prospective students into the Music Department’s instrumental ensembles, applied instruction, and other Music courses. This includes working with the Admissions Office and reviewing the music supplements to applications to the College.
6. Attend and adjudicate all end-of-semester instrumental juries. Track student instrumentalist progress from semester to semester, with regard to technique, repertoire, and ensemble participation.
7. In consultation with the Chair, manage the hiring, evaluation, and retention of instrumental instructors. Maintain collegial relationships with all instrumental instructors. Enforce departmental policies, and see that instructors uphold the Department’s and College’s shared mission.
8. Attend six-to-eight departmental staff meetings each semester.
9. Supervise student pursuing the instrumental track in the Music major, including their preparation and recitals.
10. Manage the instrumental music budget and the department’s instrumental music resources (instrument inventory, instrument lockers, sheet music, music stands, chairs, etc.). In consultation with the Chair, determine and plan future acquisitions.
11. Manage the hiring and payment of guest instrumentalists as needed.
12. Work with Alumni Affairs, Institutional Advancement, and the President’s Office to develop and implement a long term fundraising strategy for the instrumental music program.
13. In consultation with the Chair, work with the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities on the following duties:
  • Oversee and administer Ensemble Scholarships for all students, tracking recipients from year to year
  • Audition all incoming students to determine applied instructor placement
  • Oversee the faculty recital program
  • Oversee the scheduling and payment of accompanists and coaches
  • Maintain the Applied Music Handbook from semester to semester
  • Oversee the weekly informal student recital series
  • Oversee and cultivate jury and recital standards across all areas of applied music study
  • In order to prepare for the next academic year, be available for occasional meetings and regular email
    communication during the summer months

  • The minimum of an MM in Instrumental Conducting
  • Considerable teaching and administrative experience
  • A demonstrated record of building and sustaining a student orchestral ensemble
  • Comprehensive knowledge of instrumental repertoire, including orchestral, chamber, and solo music
  • Record of excellence as a faculty colleague and departmental citizen
  • Successful experience as an administrator, including the management of personnel, budgets, fundraising, and policies
  • Strong organizational and writing skills
