The Theatre Management and Programming Office (TMPO) provides theatrical support services for the Wilkins Theatre, the Little Theatre and the East Campus Theatre for the Kean University campus in Union, New Jersey. The Managing Assistant Director creates policies and procedures for theatre production and programming and is responsible for managing all technical aspects of University-sponsored productions and rental productions, including, but not limited to: managing the setup, run, operation and striking of shows; managing lighting, sound, fly system and rigging; managing the maintenance of all theatre systems; managing personnel and overseeing student and part-time professional crew recruitment, training and scheduling; and performing related work as required.
The Managing Assistant Director ensures the safety of all theatre employees, volunteers, participants and visitors by enforcing security, safety and fire safety measures and ensures compliance with all federal, state and local laws concerning public assembly and performance spaces. Tasks to be performed frequently involve standing and bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs and working in high places. This position requires a flexible schedule including many night and weekend hours.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college; two years of professional experience in theatrical production; and a driver’s license valid in New Jersey is required. This position requires significant knowledge of modern audio, video and lighting systems and technology, as well as the software and programs to operate them. Expertise in reviewing/evaluating technical riders and determining rental needs to supplement existing stock or equipment and familiarity with Microsoft Word/Excel and Vectorworks is also required.
