Job Description:
 
 
POSITION: The Department of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio, seeks a qualified person to develop and direct the UTSA Marching Band and coordinate additional existing athletic and service bands.

This is a 10 month, non-tenure-track position, with an initial contract of 3 years.

The Marching Band, a new ensemble within the University, will begin exhibition performances in 2010 and perform at UTSA football games in the Alamodome, starting September 3, 2011.

The successful candidate will:

• Oversee all aspects of the Roadrunner Pep Band and the Marching Band
• Supervise two Graduate Assistants, who assist with rehearsals and performances
• Work with the development officers from Student Affairs, the College of Liberal and Fine Arts and community members, to acquire funds for the financial stability of the Athletic Bands
• Recruit students for the Band Program
• Coordinate the purchase of equipment, instruments, uniforms and music for the Athletic Bands
• Organize travel for the Band
• Function as a liaison between Athletics, Student Affairs and the Department of Music
• Develop and administrate a summer high school band camp to enhance recruitment

The appointment is effective August 1, 2010.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess a strong background in Athletic Band Pedagogy and Leadership, show developed organizational skills and demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications: Master of Music or Master of Music Education; demonstrated success in teaching in the collegiate and/or public school settings; experience with marching band drill writing and computer drill design; significant creative professional activity in the field; and, strong background in band conducting.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC: The Department offers programs leading to the B.M. in Performance, Composition, Music Education and Music Marketing, the B.A. in Music and the M.M. in Conducting, Performance, Piano Pedagogy and Music Education. The Faculty comprises 63 members, who serve a student body of 285 Undergraduates and 23 Graduates. The Department occupies a facility that includes a 500 seat Recital Hall, two large rehearsal halls, practice rooms, classrooms and Faculty studios and offices. The Institute for Music Research, founded in 1992 to promote research in the areas of Music Psychology and Music Technology, is housed within the Department and participates in collaborative research with Faculty from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

THE UNIVERSITY: More than 29,000 students are currently enrolled at The University of Texas at San Antonio, at two campus locations. UTSA offers more than 50 Undergraduate, Master's and Doctoral Degrees throughout its seven Colleges.

The Department of Music is part of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts which includes eleven Departments. The Department of Music is housed on the 600-acre 1604 Campus, located 20 minutes from downtown San Antonio, in the South Texas Hill Country.

The UTSA Downtown Campus which opened in July of 1997, includes four buildings, a 300 seat theater, music technology labs and a recording studio.

Best known for its historic and cultural attractions, such as the Spanish Missions National Park, the Riverwalk and the Alamo, the city is enjoying unprecedented growth, with a rapid influx of new residents and businesses. The city's arts institutions include a number of organizations that sponsor concert, recital, opera and dance series. San Antonio also has several art museums and galleries.
