Details

The College of Architecture + Urban Planning is pleased to be a lead unit in a new cluster hire initiative at the University of Utah focused on Resilient Places for an Aging Society. Together with the School of Medicine, the College of Health, the College of Nursing and the College of Social Work, this strategic effort aims to build upon existing strengths at the university and hire four new faculty that will catalyze an interdisciplinary translational research cluster addressing this theme. This cluster will engage in the implementation and evaluation of place-based interventions designed to enable older adults to live healthier lives.

This search seeks an ambitious, collaboration-minded tenure-track Assistant Professor with an appointment in the School of Architecture. The ideal candidate’s scholarship will focus on translational design research dedicated to health promotion for our aging society. Previous demonstrable funded collaborations with others beyond the architecture discipline is highly preferable. Potential translational research areas include, but are certainly not limited to:
• the socio-environmental disparities of healthy aging (mental & physical);
• planning for healthy cities;
• inclusive design for aging and disability, including issues of affordability; and
• smart homes and linkages to Gerotechnology.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year, two of which will be related to the theme of Resilient Places for an Aging Society (these courses may also need to meet certain accreditation performance criteria). While the tenure-track home will be the School of Architecture, the teaching load will be tailored across the college to the expertise of the successful candidate. They will be expected to join the Center on Aging at the University of Utah and to engage in collaborative grantsmanship and dissemination with others connected to this cluster hire initiative.

Applicants must hold a PhD prior to January 1, 2019, preferably in, but not limited to, architecture, planning or design. Preferred qualifications include a record of both peer-reviewed publication with a good citation rate and grantsmanship; prior teaching experience; an accredited professional architectural degree; and a credential reflecting expertise in a health-related area (e.g. a degree, certificate or a credential such as WELL AP or EDAC).

The College of Architecture + Planning has shaped a leading edge place-based vision for the future of architecture, design and planning education— “the ethic of care.” The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of faculty members who have shaped a culture of innovation and collaboration exemplified by our research centers: the Metropolitan Research Center, the Center for Ecological Planning and Design and the Consortium for Dark Sky Studies. The School of Architecture has strengths in social justice, environmental stewardship, and community engagement (exemplified by its award-winning Design Build BLUFF program).

The College of Architecture + Planning (www.cap.utah.edu) is part of the University of Utah, the flagship research university for the state. Salt Lake City hosts a diverse and cosmopolitan population, exemplified by its 7th largest LGBT population in the country and its 8th place as Best Foodie City.

Qualified applicants must submit:
• A curriculum vitae;
• Letter of application that includes a statement of both research and pedagogical objectives;
• A one-page statement of research linking their research to the theme of “Resilient Places for an Aging Society;”
• A digital portfolio demonstrating the ability to teach design-oriented content (max 8MB); and
• A list of three references (with email addresses and phone numbers).

Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2018 with an expectation that the appointment will begin on July 1, 2019. Please submit materials to http://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/83110.
