We are looking for a
Professor of Strategic Service Design
to lead education and research in design-driven inquiry on new digital services, service creation processes, strategic service design competencies and service business strategies. Service design is one of the fastest growing design competence areas both in Finland and internationally and the Department of Design aims at being on a leader in comprehending what is going on and show the way for the new culture of design. As the Professor of Strategic Service Design you will build on the traditions, practices and theories of human-centered design, user experience, collaborative design, interaction design and creative design thinking. In all of these fields the Department of Design has a long history of pioneering research. But this present expertise needs to be expanded constantly. You will need to dive deeper into organisational structures, design policies, emerging work practices, transformations in the logic of digital services, business and values of design such as equality and wellbeing. Do you know how is this going to be possible? We are eager to discuss this with you. What we know for sure is that understanding emerging service cultures is essential for the competitiveness of companies and the effectivenss of public organizations in the dynamics of local and global economies and society.
Your role and goals
As the Professor of Strategic Service Design you will study and develop service design strategies, organisational models and competences for business, public sector and/or NGOs. In addition to your own research, your support is needed to make others flourish. You will facilitate, plan and lead the research work of others in cross-disciplinary Aalto research and its innovation ecosystem. You will be teaching and working with our international students pursuing bachelors, masters and doctoral theses as well as with seasoned professionals up-dating their design expertise. Your success will depend on your skills to persuade individuals and organisations to co-create services, strategies and knowledge. It will also rely on producing and supporting cutting-edge, internationally-leading research in the field. Building a network of university external partners will be an integral part of your daily business. All professors at Aalto also have numerous roles in department and university leadership. You can develop your competences on Aalto tenure track if you are not yet on full professor level. The specific goals for your future work will be agreed in annual objective discussions with your superior.

At the Department of Design your closest colleagues will work in the Encore, Inuse and Strategic Design Integration and Management research teams (designresearch.aalto.fi) and Master of Arts programmes in International Design Business Management as well as in Collaborative and Industrial Design (aalto.fi/department-of-design). You will be reporting to the Head of the Department of Design. Your networks within Aalto will go beyond Aalto ARTS and include world-leading researchers, educators and innovators from other schools such as Aalto School of Business and School of Science. You cross-disciplinary work will also be supported by existing university wide structures such as the Aalto Experience platform and Aalto Digi paltform.
Your experience and ambitions
You will contribute to Aalto ARTS research and education with a broad range of competences. Your merits in all of the following areas will be valued. In several of those you excel and in the rest you have solid foundations and a passion to learn.
- You have a doctoral level degree in design or another applicable field dealing with service design, development, research or management.
- You have strong experience and a publication record in Strategic Service Design related research and we will appreciate your record of success in research leadership and fundraising.
- Your design practice experience is a strong merit. You are eager to engage in transdisciplinary inquiry dealing with service strategy.
- It goes without saying that your collaboration and communication skills are outstanding. Fluent English is required. Finnish and Swedish competencies are clear merits and we will also take into account proficiency in other languages, including programming languages.
- Remember to mention in your application your university level teaching and supervision experience as well as educational leadership merits.
- Finally, we are interested in your passion for making an impact and your professional and academic networks. These can be demonstrated through your engagement and leadership in professional and academic organisations.
