The School of Film/Video at CalArts seeks candidates for full-time visiting faculty positions in the Program in Experimental Animation for 1- or 2- year appointments.

We seek candidates who will strengthen our student-focused, critically-engaged animation program with an exciting animation practice and an enthusiasm for working with animation students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The ideal candidate will be an animation practitioner with a commitment to animation as an experimental and personal artform. They should demonstrate a strong interest in modes of teaching that are in line with CalArts’ commitment to radical pedagogy as holistic, experimental investigation. The Program in Experimental Animation is committed to animation as a boundary-pushing, exploratory, personal medium. Our curriculum is built around supporting students as they pursue their creative paths as animators, including in drawn animation, under-the-camera methods, stop-motion, installation, VR, and hybrid practices. The Program enjoys a long-standing international reputation for excellence in innovative animation production.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; mentoring students on their artistic and academic progress; independent studies; and participating in faculty service as assigned. A strong commitment to teaching, student achievement, and academic service are expected.

The ideal candidate will be able to teach animation courses at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels; lead advanced-level critiques; and work with students individually through independent studies and the mentor system that is the foundation of the School of Film/Video. They will have the ability to bring their own innovative animation practice to the classroom to inspire, challenge, and instruct students.

Candidates should have experience as an animator, higher ed teaching experience preferred , and a record of recognition for their creative work. An MFA or comparable professional experience is required. Candidates for this visiting position must legally be able to work in the U.S.
