The Department of Dance, Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, seeks candidates of national and international stature to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in Dance and Dance Education and support our robust EdM Program in Dance Education. Desired qualifications include:
- PK-12 dance teacher certification (any state) and a minimum of five years of full-time PK-12 dance teaching experience
- PK-12 teaching experience in urban settings working with culturally and identity diverse populations, English language learners and students with special needs
- Fluency with culturally and identity responsive pedagogies emphasizing access, diversity, equity and inclusion in educational settings
- Experience teaching in post-secondary education
- Documented experience with mentoring and evaluating student teachers
- Knowledge of PK-12 educational learning standards, teacher evaluation systems (e.g., Danielson Framework), teacher certification policy and edTPA exam preparation
- Emerging/Substantial scholarship and leadership in dance education with national and international scope
- Proficiency with leading teacher advancement initiatives with state, national and international scope
- Knowledge of elements of dance and somatic approaches to dance
- Strong pedagogical, organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills
- Additional qualifications: choreography and production experience; teaching competency in diverse dance forms—especially dance form(s) distinct from ballet and modern/contemporary
Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the EdM Dance Education program. The faculty member will teach dance pedagogy courses such as Curriculum Design and Assessment for Dance, Dance Technique Pedagogy, Creative Dance and Choreography Pedagogy, Embodied Dance History Pedagogy, Introduction to Research in Dance Education, Internship Seminar and Leadership in Dance Education. The faculty member will also be responsible for administrative and field-based initiatives, including supervision of student teaching interns, participating in recruitment efforts, shared governance through committee work and supporting Dance EdM partnership initiatives. Based on qualifications, additional duties might include teaching classes in the BFA and BA programs (e.g., Teaching as an Artist, Movement Practices).
The position starting date is July 1, 2023.
