The School of Drama at the University of Washington (UW) invites applications for an assistant professor, tenure-track position in Acting, Directing, and Devising to begin September 2020. This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period; the teaching will be split between the undergraduate and graduate programs.

The University of Washington School of Drama (SoD) develops innovative and courageous artists and scholars poised to be the creative leaders of tomorrow. We are committed to producing citizens capable of contributing to a more creative, connected, and compassionate world. SoD’s current faculty is made up of working artists who are deeply connected to the field. SoD graduates go on to careers in film, television, arts management, advertising, design, creative media and other areas such as law and business where the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, entrepreneurship and creativity are essential.

The ideal candidate has a solid body of work as an actor, director, and/or originator. They have familiarity with contemporary theatre and performance, an interest in the way theatre is evolving as an art form and how it connects with other media and disciplines, and a facility with current modes of performance training. A Master’s degree (either MFA or MA) or a combination of equivalent professional training and experience is required. SoD’s current acting training is based on the practices of Konstantin Stanislavski combined with extensive physical training that includes Suzuki Method, Viewpoints, Alexander Technique, Dance, and Stage Combat.

The focus of this teaching position is on acting, and creative processes for generating original work. Other duties, per the candidate’s skill set, may include teaching/mentoring directors, working collaboratively on devised projects, directing/coaching in UW’s season, or directing/coaching original works and solo pieces.

All UW faculty members engage in teaching, research, and service. Tenure-stream Drama faculty must develop and maintain an ongoing professional career.

Our faculty, staff, and students are intellectually engaged with the ways that race, gender identity, sexuality, ability, class, and ethnicity intersect within and shape the human experience, both within the educational experience and outside of it. We encourage all members of the School of Drama to think critically about the world around them, and engage actively. Thus, we are seeking candidates whose research, teaching, and/or service have not only prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion, but have also given them the confidence to fully engage audiences in higher education from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

They should include a letter of application describing your expertise and experience in research and teaching; a curriculum vitae; and a statement (maximum of 500 words) on how your teaching, research, and/or service demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion through scholarship/creative research or by improving access to higher education for underrepresented individuals or groups. Three letters of recommendation must also be submitted through Interfolio.

Priority consideration will be given to applications received by October 21, 2019.
