The Department of Theatre at the University of South Dakota invites applications for a nine-month term tenure-track position in Acting to commence August 2021. The successful candidate will teach beginning through advanced acting, stage voice, dialects, auditioning, and acting/voice for camera and other media, with opportunities to teach other courses depending on curricular needs and specialization areas. The person will serve as dialect/vocal coach for all department productions requiring one. Depending on interest and experience, other means of participating in production season may be an option. The successful candidate will guide students toward a career in the theatre, coordinate and serve as the lead recruiter for the B.F.A. acting program, assist with recruitment for the other areas in the department, and oversee and mentor the Irene Ryan nominees for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). Participation in Inclusive Excellence by undertaking outreach to diverse communities (multicultural student organizations, Native American community, LGBTQIA+ community, Latino community, veterans, women, etc.) on and off campus is expected. Faculty members are evaluated in the areas of teaching, research/creative scholarship and service. All faculty are expected to be active in research/creative scholarship on local, regional, and national levels, to advise and mentor students in and out of the classroom, and to serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
Qualifications: MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in acting is required; PhD with appropriate training and experience may be considered. A minimum of three years of university teaching of acting at all levels, beginning through advanced, and a substantial background in one or more major voice-training programs, such as Lessac, Linklater, Rodenburg, Berry, etc. are required. Professional acting experience is required and membership in professional unions such as AEA or SAG-AFTRA is preferred. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; sponsorship is not available for this position.
