Assistant or Associate Professor in Film Editing (tenure track)

Aalto University will appoint the successful candidate for Assistant or Associate level on the Aalto University tenure track system. The Aalto tenure track principles are explained at The position will begin in Spring 2022 or as agreed. The position is located in the Department of Film, Television and Scenography / ELO Film School Finland. The film school was founded in 1959, and it is one of the oldest film schools in Europe and the world.

The Degree Programme in Film and Television offers education in nine majors (specialisation): film directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, film sound design, documentary film, production design and costume design. In addition, the Department offers education in film history and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches to filmmaking. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and other national and international higher education institutions specialising in arts. For more information, see

Your role and goals
The tasks of the Assistant/Associate Professor include:

Artistic activity (and possibly also research) in the field

Development and service in the Department

The Professor will co-operate with the Department's faculty, other departments and other Art Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences. Many of the BA and MA courses in the Department are organised together with the other majors. The Professor will also work tightly with the professional field, build collaborations within Aalto and create and maintain national, Nordic and international collaboration networks. Furthermore, the Professor will actively develop the major, the Department, and the practised teaching methods in close collaboration with the faculty of the Department. 

Assistant/Associate Professor in Film Editing will also focus on the future artistic challenges in film editing. The main challenge of the position is to provide expertise in film editing practice in its many varieties. An in-depth view of the aesthetic tradition and the contemporary and future forms of audio-visual arts is essential.

Aalto University expects the selected person to maintain an active professional career as a film editor while working as a professor. It is possible to take periodic, uncompensated leaves of absence to pursue artistic work. It is also possible to apply for compensated leaves for research or artistic work. The position will require relocation to Finland for candidates not already located in the country.

Your experience
Aalto University will emphasise artistic excellence in the selection process. The applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications and comprehensive practical experience in the field. We expect the candidate to be familiar with all aspects of film editing. Experience in teaching is also highly valued. Furthermore, a commitment to developing film and television through artistic and professional work and teaching activities is necessary.

We expect the candidate to know the appropriate traditional, contemporary and emerging film editing methods and technologies. Furthermore, the applicant needs to understand the theory, practice and technical demands of film editing and have a solid and well-articulated vision regarding the field and how it should be developed and taught.

Aalto University will review the applicant based on the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, collaborative skills, and activity and leadership in the artistic or academic community. International experience and research and publication activity are considered an asset but are not required.

The position requires fluent command of both written and spoken English. Finnish and Swedish language skills are considered as advantages.
