Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Dance

Position Description: The University of South Dakota invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Dance to commence August 2024. This individual will serve as coordinator of the Dance Minor and work closely with the coordinator of the Musical Theatre program on curricular modifications in dance and musical theatre student advising. The successful candidate will teach classes within our dance curriculum that include, but are not limited to, Ballet levels I-III, Jazz Dance levels I-II, Tap Dance levels I-II, Modern Dance levels I-II, Musical Theatre Styles, and Choreography. This appointment requires that the candidate choreograph and/or mentor student choreographers for our musicals and direct our biennial Spring Dance Showcase. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of communities, and who have a commitment to providing an open and welcoming environment for all students, are encouraged to apply. All faculty members are expected to be active in recruitment and to be active in research/creative scholarship.
Qualifications: MFA in Dance, an MFA in Musical Theatre with a dance emphasis, or an MA in Dance with at least 3 years of professional experience. Two years of teaching in higher education and professional experience required.
Rank and salary: Assistant Professor: $48,000-$53,000.

Department of Theatre: Located in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, the Theatre Department is part of the College of Fine Arts, which also includes the departments of Art and Music. A faculty of ten serve eighty-five theatre majors in a program that offers the BFA and MFA degrees with a specialization in design/technology and emphases in scene design, lighting/ sound design, costume design, and technical theatre. The University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and is affiliated with the Black Hills Playhouse, a 70-year-old summer stock theatre located in Custer State Park, and the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival which provides free Shakespeare in the park in Vermillion.
