Special Notice:  The Department of Music is dedicated to building the best instrumental leadership team possible and is searching for an outstanding candidate to join an already accomplished and versatile colleague.  We are running two simultaneous searches, one for Director of Athletic Bands, and one for Director of Symphonic Bands.  These searches will result in a single hire, either as Director of Athletic Bands or as Director of Symphonic Bands.  The existing member of our instrumental leadership team will then take on the other role.  Applicants should submit a single application, specifying the position they are most qualified for and passionate about.  If you have any questions about this process, please email the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, Bruce.Kelley@usd.edu.

 

Position:  Full-time, ten-month, tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor. Seeking a dynamic professional whose primary responsibilities are to direct the University Symphonic Band and collaborate with colleagues to manage the operation of the band area, including scholarship management, recruitment, program growth and development, etc. Secondary responsibilities may include: directing the Concert Band, teaching courses in conducting, assisting with the Athletic Bands, teaching applied studio lessons, teaching courses within the music education curriculum, assisting with the USD Band Directors Institute, coordinating the annual Quad State Honor Band, serving as Director or Assistant Director of the USD Summer Music Camp, and other responsibilities as appropriate to appointee’s qualifications and departmental needs.  As part of a normal workload you may be asked to teach online courses.  Excellence in teaching and recruiting is expected -- both in the classroom, on the campus, and in the greater community.  Appointment begins July 22, 2023.

 

Qualifications:  Doctorate in performance, instrumental conducting, or music education required, ABD considered. Candidates must clearly demonstrate a history of success leading symphonic/concert bands. Previous teaching experience and leadership of a band program is preferred. Experience with music education programs desirable. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

 

Rank & Salary:  Assistant or Associate Professor, salary based on qualifications.
