Fabrication Lab Manager
Dean, College of Architecture & Environmental Design

Kent Campus - Kent, OH

The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) at Kent State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Fabrication Lab Manager. The successful candidate will oversee operations of roughly 6800 SF integrated analog/digital fabrication and construction spaces within an ascending national research university. The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, art, industrial design, engineering or a related field and have at least five years of fabrication experience in academic and/or professional settings including demonstrable proficiency and experience in fabrication environments, programming and using CNC-based equipment, using and repairing woodworking and metalworking equipment or related experience. The Manager will collaborate with CAED faculty and administrators to establish a vision and mission for the integration and application of fabrication systems in an evolving educational environment. They will order, install, maintain and continually improve equipment and materials for a state-of-the-art wood/metal shop and digital fabrication lab; maintain effective access and safety standards and protocols; develop budgets and reports; and interview, train, and supervise full or part-time staff and students in the interest of advancing a culture of applied and experimental making that serves the progressive pedagogy of an educationally-based fabrication lab.

Required qualifications include experience operating, managing, and training others to use two or more of the following digital fabrication systems: CNC milling, CNC metal fabrication, additive manufacturing, and robotic arms. Experience using, installing and maintaining software for 3D modeling, scripting and/or controlling robotic, CNC, and/or Arduino systems is also beneficial. The successful candidate will have experience using and repairing woodworking and metalworking equipment and have the ability to creatively integrate traditional analog fabrication methods with emerging digital techniques. The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, 20/20 vision (naturally or with correction), training in First Aid and CPR, and the ability to lift or strategize the lifting of heavy equipment and materials. An interest in providing instruction and developing an expanded network of local and regional industry partnerships is also preferred.

The CAED, which occupies buildings in Kent, Cleveland, and Florence (Italy), has become an effective arm for extending the University’s growing emphasis on applied research. Its distinguished faculty and established programs in Architecture, Interior Design, Architectural Studies, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Healthcare Design and Construction Management offer numerous cross-disciplinary research opportunities and maintain close relationships with regional industry and design practice. The Fabrication Lab(s) occupy space in a new 107,000 SF CAED building designed by Weiss/Manfredi.

Located midway between New York and Chicago, the Cleveland/Akron metro area occupies the heart of a burgeoning cultural and industrial region that is home to exceptional industry and manufacturing resources and some of the world’s finest art museums, parks, universities, restaurants, theaters, music venues, and independent cinemas. These include nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park, along with buildings and landscapes designed by Marcel Breuer, Coop Himmelb(l)au, James Corner, R. Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gehry, Albert Kahn, Maya Lin, Erich Mendelsohn, Farshid Moussavi, Laurie Olin, Frederick Law Olmstead, I.M. Pei, Stanley Saitowitz, Robert Smithson, and Rafael Viñoly.

Required Application Materials:
1)    Cover letter
2)    CV
3)    Portfolio in PDF format (10 pages, 5 MB max.)
4)    Phone and e-mail contacts for 3 references

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Review of applications will begin February 15, 2019 and continue until position is filled. Full consideration will be given to candidates who have submitted by March 15, 2019.
