We are now looking for a
Staff Scientist in fashion transition towards sustainability
We are hiring staff scientist to enhance and support a world-leading team of researchers in sustainable fashion at the Department of Design at Aalto University’s School of Arts Design and Architecture. In this position you will complement our research in textile and fashion field especially in the transition and transformation towards sustainability including design, industry, business and/or consumers’ viewpoints. You will also contribute to teaching in areas where Aalto is already a leader. Join us in shaping the future!
The position will begin as agreed, but at the latest in September 2024. This is a full-time position, and fixed- term (3 years).
Your role and goals
- You will pursue research around fashion transition towards sustainability independently and in collaboration with the professors at the Department of Design.
- You will work with other faculty in this area and provide help in building up national and international research projects and consortia and help manage projects related to transition towards sustainability in fashion.
- Your role also includes advising doctoral and master's students as well as participation in teaching in your areas of expertise.
- You will participate in regular research activities, such as research seminars, workshops and conferences and administrative tasks and educational development in the Department of Design and at the level of School.
- You will interact in various ways with society, including Aalto University’s stakeholders, and help to build relevant networks.
In all, your exciting goal is to collaborate in the department and help to consolidate the already cutting-edge sustainable fashion research capacities at the Department of Design and Aalto towards wide and impactful global presence. We are particularly interested in colleagues who have a proven facility for both excellent independent research and the ability to work effectively as part of teams.

Your experience and ambitions
We are looking to hire an ambitious colleague to participate in the department's research and education. We expect you to have:
- Demonstrable expertise and track record in research area of Sustainable fashion and especially Fashion transition towards sustainability
- Proven capacity to attract competitive external research funding, both independently and as part of broader senior teams
- Proven capacity to undertake and publish research both independently and as part of larger teams of more senior and junior scholars
- Doctoral degree in Design or a related discipline
- Experience with working in an academic institutional setting, including in collaborating with colleagues and supporting mutually understood goals
- Excellent skills in English / Finnish proficiency is considered as an advantage
