The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture invites applications and nominations for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in Interior Design at the rank of Assistant Professor with the appointment starting in the fall of 2025. The successful candidate will contribute to the school’s vibrant studio culture; teach required and elective courses in their area of expertise; and pursue a productive research trajectory that contributes to the advancement of their field. Of particular interest are candidates whose approach to interior design is aimed at addressing timely environmental issues.

The University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest and most highly regarded public universities in the United States. The School of Architecture offers professionally accredited and post-professional degree programs in Interior Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Community and Regional Planning, in addition to post-professional and research degree programs in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Urban Design. The Interior Design Program offers CIDA-accredited professional degrees at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as a graduate research-oriented post-professional degree. The School’s two research centers, the Center for Sustainable Design (CSD) and the Center for American Architecture and Design (CAAD), as well as resources such as the Materials Lab, the Build Lab, and the Technology Lab, actively support faculty-led endeavors. This academic environment, as well as the context of the city and the region within which it is situated,  provides ample opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement and collaboration. As the 11th most populated city in the US and rapidly expanding, Austin is a thriving, culturally vibrant community with rich natural environs. It is centrally located in the growing megaregion of Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio and capitalizes on the rich borderland culture between Mexico and the United States. The city’s fast transformation provides opportunities and resources for professional education while also enabling students to gain a broader view of their field in relation to contemporary challenges for the built environment at local and global scales.

Qualifications

The Interior Design Program seeks candidates whose work, experience, and interests offer inspiring and innovative perspectives on relevant discipline-specific issues through research, scholarship, critical practice, and pedagogy. In addition to teaching design studios, seminars, and lecture courses, the successful candidate will be able to state the goals and trajectory of their research, scholarly trajectory, and/or creative practice as well as articulate the anticipated contribution of this work to the advancement of the field. Applicants whose work engages materials research and innovation, advanced fabrication technologies, visualization and simulation media, environmental controls, artificial intelligence, and design entrepreneurship within the framework of interiors as an environmentally-minded field are encouraged to apply.

The Interior Design Program acknowledges that design is a multi-faceted endeavor with tangible consequences for society and the planet, and that its research and teaching must evolve along with the diverse constituencies that it serves. The School of Architecture benefits from strong international collaborations and welcomes national and international applicants with a range of relevant backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that will enrich its disciplines. Candidates are expected to hold, at a minimum, a terminal professional or academic degree in interior design or an allied field such as architecture or interior architecture. Preference will be given to candidates with at least one interior design degree. NCIDQ certification is required within three years of the start of the appointment. Applicants whose current academic rank is above the Assistant Professor level but otherwise meet the criteria of the search are also welcome to apply for this position.
