The School of Art and Visual Studies at the University of Kentucky seeks applications for a full-time, regular title series, 9-month tenure eligible Assistant Professor in Art History and Visual Studies to begin August 2023. The successful candidate will teach two courses on modern or contemporary art, visual culture, or curatorial studies per semester, and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in Art History & Visual Studies. Additionally, the hired faculty will be part of the team overseeing the growing Curatorial Studies MFA program with appropriate coursework, independent studies, mentorship of students, and administrative work. They will be expected to provide appropriate service to the school, college, and university.

The successful candidate will have a transnational perspective on art practice, preferably with a specialization in Asian, Middle Eastern, Native American, or Latin American Art. They should be theory-minded, incorporating into their research and teaching critical studies of ethnicity, race, caste, class, gender, and/or sexuality; colonialism, decolonization, globalization, migration, diaspora, and/or indigeneity; or institutional histories particularly those of contested and marginalized spaces. They will be able to develop new upper division courses in one or more of the following areas: curatorial practice, exhibition history, social practice, and community engagement; critical theory and methodologies of various forms of art writing; or histories of photography, video, digital media, and design. The candidate will complement current faculty specializations and actively develop an interdisciplinary art historical practice that stresses innovation in scholarship and pedagogy. The projected distribution of effort for this position is 40% teaching, 40% creative activity/research, and 20% service. The salary range for this position is $58,000-$62,000.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the time of employment and have at least one year of teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate school. We seek a productive scholar and effective teacher specializing in global modern and contemporary art. Broadly defined curatorial experience is essential.
