Position description

The Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, in Ethnomusicology (open rank and open field of research).

The main criteria guiding our selection of candidates will not be based on pre-selected geographic areas of study. They will be based on the following qualifications: a scholar of ethnomusicology who has ethnographic experience and a deep knowledge of the discipline; who is making significant contributions to it, both theoretically and methodologically; who demonstrates innovative thinking by asking new questions about old or new musical practices in connection with the political, economic, social, cultural, technological, or ecological realities that inform them; and whose commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging informs their theoretical or conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches as well as their course contents and pedagogy.

The program of ethnomusicology at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the oldest in the United States, contributing to ever-evolving expansion in curricular content and types of research questions pursued with inter- and transdisciplinary methodologies and perspectives at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Our program offers faculty enormous opportunities to pursue collaboration with scholars in other fields of research in many of Berkeley's outstanding research facilities, including units focusing on specific geographic areas, such as the Institute for South Asia Studies and Centers for Middle Eastern Studies and Latin American Studies. Other research units address specific communities such as the Centers for African Studies and Chinese Studies, and target key domains of inquiry such as the Center of Race and Gender and the Center for Effective Global Action. At the undergraduate level, the Department attracts double majors from a diverse array of fields around campus, and its steady record of good undergraduate enrollments matches that of the largest departments in the Division of Arts and Humanities.

The Department encourages applications from candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service. We recognize that a diverse workforce is essential for maintaining legitimacy as a public university dedicated to serving the needs of our increasingly diverse state. The Department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents.
