Position Overview 

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University is seeking a Pre-College Instructor to teach in our SMFA Studio Art Intensive summer program for high schoolers. This on-campus program will invite top tier art students entering grades 10-12 or class of 2023 high school graduates to give art school a test drive by introducing them to the SMFA’s interdisciplinary approach to art-making. The program will take place from Monday July 9 - July 28, 2023. 

Responsibilities 

As a Program Instructor, your duties include, but are not limited to: 

On-Site Studio Art Instruction 

  • Instructors will teach 3 sections (or fewer, pending program enrollment) of their course, each section meets two times per week for 3 hours each session. 
  • Instructors will attend a collaborative planning meeting in the spring of 2023. 

  • Instructors will provide a syllabus to the program lead by June 2023. 

  • Instructors are responsible for communicating with their classroom assistants what their expectations are for classroom support  

  • Instructors will be responsible for overseeing clean-up in their instructional space 

Materials 

  • Instructors will communicate needed materials to the program lead by May 2023 

  • Instructors will make materials available in the classroom for student use. 

Studio Monitor & Student Mentoring 

  • Instructors will be present during lunch/open studio time to meet with students and monitor the studios 

  • Field Trip Chaperone 

  • Attend one field trip as a chaperone. 

Compensation 

Compensation: $5,000 base rate, plus $500 for each additional section taught, not to exceed $6,000 total. Number of sections will be based on final program enrollment. 

Qualifications

We are seeking an engaging instructor who uses an interdisciplinary approach to teaching through case-studies and hands-on class activities. 

Required: 

  • Applicants should have facility working with a range of students and artistic abilities 

  • Experience working with high school students 

  • Experience creating and teaching 2D subjects in painting and drawing  

  • Candidates should have an MFA with some teaching experience at the high school level 

  • Candidates should possess the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary arts environment, and the desire to inspire teenage artists to apply to college 

  • Candidates should have the ability to attend 2 two-hour planning meetings in spring 2023
