The Department of Art and Media conducts research and artistic activities across a broad range of subjects and themes. These include Art Education, Contemporary Art, Curating, Game Design, New Media, Photography, Visual Communication Design and Visual Culture. The department provides education in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral levels.  
 
The department was formed in 2022 as a merger of two departments which are both recognized internationally for high-quality artistic outputs, media productions and art pedagogical activities, scholarship, and research. The Department of Art and Media, with approximately 800 students and over 100 staff members, is the biggest department in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. 


We are now looking for a University Teacher or Lecturer/University Lecturer for our Visual Communication Design major. 
 
The position will be filled according to the Aalto University Lecturer Career System (University Teacher or Lecturer/University Lecturer). The position is a permanent position. More information on the Aalto University Lecturer Career System
 
The position will be filled on 1st of August 2023, or as agreed. 
 
Your role  
The University Teacher or Lecturer/University Lecturer will have an important role in teaching the Visual Communication Design majors of the BA and MA programs in Art and Media. Teachers and lecturers may also teach in other departments of Aalto. The position will focus on competence in design for digital environments, specifically teaching the basics of motion graphics (2D+3D), the outlines of visual design and narratives in time-based media, as well as the design and production of digital audiovisual projects with computational elements. 

You will work as a member of the teaching team for the Visual communication design major and other departments of Aalto ARTS, taking part in delivering courses, tutoring students and in curriculum development. You will also participate in evaluation tasks, supervising thesis and take part in the student admissions activities.  
 
Co-teaching and co-learning are important parts of the program of Art and Media and the VCD major. You should therefore thrive from working collaboratively with other teachers in planning and delivering courses and projects. You should be able to teach both in person and online, successfully using contemporary ways of creating teaching and learning environments. 
 
Your experience  
You hold the master’s degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field of education. We seek a visionary teacher/lecturer who has strong merits in their own art/design practice, pedagogical competence, and a dedication for teaching. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in academic administration, and a proven ability to work well with faculty, students, and senior academic staff.  
 
We are looking for a candidate who has experience as a practicing designer and educator with university level experience in teaching, course planning and coordinating courses.   
 
The language of instruction for the bachelor's major in Visual Communication Design is Finnish and the language of instruction for the master's major is English, thus you should have good oral and written communication skills for teaching and supervising students in Finnish and in English.

The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University. The position is located in Otaniemi, Espoo in a new campus building made and designed for the School of ARTS. Application process  
The Department Committee will select from among the applicants those who are invited to visit the Department of Art and Media and possibly give a teaching demonstration in Aalto ARTS on week 12. The Departmental Committee and the School´s teaching competence assessment committee will also interview the short-listed applicants. Aalto University uses external reviewers during the recruitment process.  
  
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following: artistic professional and/or research merits, management and teaching competence, collaborative skills and activity in the professional field. The main weight is put on artistic-professional work and pedagogical skills.
