The Department of Music is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Ethnomusicology.

Applicants should have: (i) a PhD degree in ethnomusicology or a relevant field; and (ii) a record of outstanding publications and successful grant applications, or clear potential thereof. Area of specialization is open, but we prefer candidates with a primary research focus on Chinese or Asian musics (broadly defined), as well as a secondary expertise (geographic or theoretical) in another area that complements the existing strengths of the ethnomusicology program.

The appointee is expected to complement the Department’s Ethnomusicology program, to strengthen research activities, and to actively apply for external grants. Duties include (a) conducting top-tier independent research; (b) teaching two courses per semester at undergraduate/postgraduate level; (c) supervising students’ projects and postgraduate theses; and (d) assisting in administrative duties.

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2022, which, subject to performance and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.
