BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY

Assistant Professor, Graphic Design. Tenure Track. Competitive salary with full benefits. Duties include: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses across all levels. Maintain creative research and professional involvement. Participate in graphic/integrative design curriculum development, advising program majors, and educational and professional activities within the School, College, and the University. Commitment to community’s sense of belonging. Starting date: August 7, 2023.

Minimum qualifications: Completion of the requirements for a terminal degree (e.g., MFA, MGD, MDes or PhD) in a design[1]related field (e.g., graphic design, design/visual communications, design and technology) from an accredited university by the start of employment in August 2023; University-level teaching experience as instructor of record in design-related programs and at least two semesters as a TA; Creative/research work in one or more of the following areas of focus; Design for Social Impact/Justice, Accessibility, Design Ethics, Machine Learning (AI), Prototyping in hybrid environments, Phygital experiences, Design Thinking and Strategy, or UI/UX design. Candidates should have a record of contributing to critical discourse in design, and through their work demonstrate an awareness of the cultural context of the discipline; Advanced technical proficiency of appropriate software applications (Adobe CS, HTML, CSS) for interactive and print outputs, as demonstrated in portfolio work (see application materials).

Preferred qualifications: Recognized professional practice as a graphic/communication/strategy designer of client-initiated or self-initiated design development; and/or demonstrated record of academic scholarship in graphic/communication/strategy design; Demonstrated expertise in Emerging Media Design (Interaction/Experience Design, UI/UX Design, Motion/Time-Based, Machine Learning, et. al.), AND one or more of the following areas: Design Justice, Information Design/Data Visualization, Integrative Design, Design Thinking and Ethics, Design Entrepreneurship, Human-Centered Design, Design Theory/Criticism, Service Design, or Social Impact Design; Awareness, understanding of, and appreciation for the practical and theoretical issues and methodologies surrounding graphic/integrative design, both in physical and digital environments., as demonstrated, for example, by recognized conference presentations, workshops, leadership and facilitation activities, community projects, academic writings, or design works on practical and theoretical issues and methodologies surrounding graphic/integrative design, both in physical and digital environments; Mastery of technology currently used in professional practice (prototyping, Web 3.0, AI/AR) of communication design, and willing to self-educate about technology as standards and practice change; Creative/ research work reflective of social responsibility in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships or grants within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally; Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations, connections, or community engagement (such as project creation, facilitation, and leadership).
