The Interim Technical Director is responsible for the planning, construction, installation and strike of scenery for Department of Theatre productions, as well as the coordination of all production elements for each show. Duties include managing the setup and teardown of scenery; supervising and teaching students in labs and student employees, volunteers and supervising professional staff, including a full-time assistant technical director. The successful candidate will supervise and manage the scene shop, prepare work calls and production calendars, budgets and planning for scenic materials, build schedules and coordinate the Department of Theatre production and academic needs with Zoellner Arts Center technical staff. The Technical Director will advise and collaborate with the Department of Theatre on scheduling, allotment of budgets, technical considerations of current and future seasons. The Technical Director will create and manage production schedules, coordinate and maintain safe and properly stocked scene shop, prepare, organize and supervise shop for classes in stagecraft and related technical and design courses. The Technical Director will also coordinate use of scene shop and other spaces scheduled for Department of Theatre activities with Zoellner Arts Center technical staff and take part in technical service planning. The Technical Director will teach as an Adjunct Professor for Department of Theatre in the area of expertise as assigned by the Department Chair. This is a 9 month interim position, with an expected end date of May 2019. We expect to post the permanent position in the Fall of 2018; the Interim is eligible to apply for the permanent position.

  • Technical Director for Department of Theatre productions

  • Creates all technical aspects of scenic elements designed by faculty, guest and student designers; provides detailed shop drawings and communicates all construction requirements to staff and students; constructs and supervises the construction of all scenic elements using the best techniques and materials; plans and manages production meetings for all productions and production related activities, supervises technical rehearsals, show runs and strikes
  • In coordination with the Department Chair, analyzes production calendar in reference to the academic calendar and makes recommendations for production dates
  • In coordination with the Department Chair, faculty and staff, analyzes and makes budgetary recommendations for productions in reference to general size and impact of projects under consideration
  • Effectively communicates requirements for completion of theatrical design concepts and develops and manages technical plans, schedules and budgets for each production, with the goal of achieving consensus with all interested parties
  • Coordinates and communicates production schedule of all aspects of Department of Theatre production with faculty, staff and students associated with department productions; supervises performances as necessary and negotiates with staff and faculty to provide performance supervisors as specified by arts center safety protocols
  • Collaborates with Directors, Designers and all production members to identify and resolve technical concerns; reviews the scripts under consideration and evaluates them based on set design and construction criteria
  • Supervises evaluates and motivates Assistant Technical Director and other assigned staff including professional and student crew
  • Provides leadership in the area of theatre technology and motivates personnel participating in scene shop activities; empowers students, staff, faculty and guest artist to pursue excellence in the area of scenery and theatre technology

  • Scene Shop management and scenic construction

  • Develops, implements and manages plans to construct and install scenery and related scenic elements and building projects
  • Supervise and communicates all aspects of the scene shop including material acquisition, safety procedures, scheduling and budgeting; plans and supervises daily activities in scene shop and related areas; empowering assigned students and staff
  • Prepares scale plans and other construction requirements for construction of all scenery and scenic elements; plans and implements construction techniques, materials, or styles for successful completion of the project
  • Purchases equipment, materials and tracks spending and labor, monitoring budgets with other project supervisors, as well as assigned administrative technical services budget
  • Manages and maintains equipment and tools; repairs and replaces all construction tools as necessary. Instructs, trains and supervises stage construction personnel in the scene shop and related spaces; plans and purchases necessary tools for stage construction in coordination with arts center budget
  • Routinely reviews and researches current safety practices in other institutions of higher learning, non-profit and commercial theaters; maintains familiarity with safety guidelines developed by the University; writes and maintains a written policy regarding safety in the scene shop; communicates this policy to faculty, staff, students and wage workers involved in scenic construction; monitors and enforces compliance with safety guidelines in the areas of stage design and technical direction, aligning with Zoellner Arts Center and Lehigh policy

  • Teaches as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Theatre in area of scenic construction

  • Creates optimal learning environment for students for teaching scenic construction and associated activities
  • Teach up to three courses per semester as assigned by the Department Chair in stagecraft, scenic technology and related subjects for the Department of Theatre, and independent studies as needed and approved
  • Attend faculty meetings and production meetings, develop syllabi, create and maintain office hours, participate in individual and group development and updating of theatre pedagogy
  • Educate and supervise students on all areas of stagecraft and scenic technology, construction, load, strike, backstage crew and other production necessities and practical projects related to scenery; work with the Department of Theatre to assign student crews, individual student assignments and lab hours in the area of stagecraft and scenic technology
  • Participate in curricular planning and assessment
  • Supervise and mentor students in theatrical technical direction and practice
  • Instruct and supervise student workers in lab/teaching environment making certain that safety protocols are followed

  • Coordination of the Department of Theatre and Zoellner Arts Center Technical Services

  • As member of the arts center staff, collaboratively coordinates management and sharing of space, time, and resources, including scene shop
  • Communicates use of hazardous stage elements with Zoellner Arts Center staff
  • Creates, manages and communicates scene shop schedule of activities to arts center administrative staff, identifying and collaborating on arts center scheduling conflicts and resolutions
  • Recommends, plans and implements long term projects related to tool purchases, shop safety, theatre equipment, facility improvement, as well as Diamond Theatre and Black Box facility needs
  • Advise and collaborate on Music Department and Zoellner Arts Center scenery-related needs and activities
  • Participate in staff meetings as required or needed

  • Will nearly continuously be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear and lift up to 10 pounds
  • Will often be required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, lifting up to 50 pounds, work near moving mechanical parts or in areas with fumes or airborne particles
  • Will occasionally work in areas with toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock or vibration
  • This position has fiscal or financial responsibilities other than employee expense activity, such as processing or approving transactions; monitoring or preparing budgets; or generating income for University
  • This position is responsible for driving university-owned vehicles as a routine function, therefore a valid Drivers License and a good driving record is required
  • This position works with minors
  • Periods of high volume/workload may be required for technical rehearsals, productions, periods of significant construction
  • Regular evening, holiday or weekend hours

  • Masters of Fine Arts in Technical Theatre is required
  • Three to five years related work experience
  • Technical direction, stage construction and carpentry for professional theater or related performing arts required
  • Experience in an academic setting where instruction and/or supervision of students is preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Solid writing ability and organizational skills
  • Solid analytical, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, county and national criminal background checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance.
