Position Summary:

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Music position in the Music Program. The Music Program in the Oregon Center for the Arts is a medium sized Music Program with 62 undergraduate and 11 graduate students. The program maintains an active presence on campus and in the community, hosting over 100 events each year. The Music Program and the Oregon Center for the Arts is actively engaging in addressing and serving the needs of the growing diversity of its student body and welcomes applicants from a diversity of backgrounds including historically underrepresented groups in higher education.

The program is seeking a candidate who can teach in the area of Commercial Music, Music Industry, Entrepreneurship, as well as, directing the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and/or Popular Music Ensembles; recruit and develop strong relationships with regional music educators; coach instrumental commercial and/or chamber music; teach music theory/aural skills, and offer individual instruction to majors and non-majors in the candidate's applied area (jazz guitar, jazz bass, or jazz piano preferred). The Program seeks applications from candidates who have an interest in and experience with jazz or commercial music, arranging, songwriting, music recording, music technology, music entrepreneurship, and/or other non-traditional career models.

As a faculty member on a tenure track , the candidate will also be expected to maintain their professional development. This can be achieved by outside performances, publishing, conference attendance and presentations, workshop presentations, and continued involvement in professional organizations. Appointment begins Fall 2020.

Assignment Includes: Direct the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and/or Popular Music Ensembles; teach music theory/aural skills, teach courses in Music Industry, and Capstone Entrepreneurship, and offer individual instruction to majors and non-majors in the candidate's applied area (jazz guitar, jazz bass, or jazz piano preferred). Additional assignments may include developing and teaching courses related to improvisation for all music majors, advanced theory, composition, creative industries, music production, sound and recording, commercial music history/appreciation, or teaching courses in other areas of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications:

Initial appointment at the rank of assistant professor requires a terminal degree in the discipline taught or ABD.
Two years of professional experience in a similar position or in the professional music field.
Experience in commercial music pedagogy.
Demonstration of effective teaching and mentorship.
Ability to work collaboratively and cordially with fellow faculty, student performers, and quest artists from diverse backgrounds.
The desire, ability, and patience to effectively teach and train novice students.

Preferred Qualification:

More than two years of professional experience in a similar position or in the professional Music field.
At least three years of successful university teaching experience or professional music experience.
Active member of a professional organization according to candidates area of expertise.
Demonstration of expertise in jazz, particularly in jazz guitar, jazz bass, or jazz piano.
Demonstration of effective academic or arts administrative experience.
Teaching, education, experience, and sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, LGBTQ+, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students.
