The Department of Visual and Material Studies (VMS) in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Field of Moving Image and Media Studies beginning Fall of 2026 (AY 2026/2027). Successful candidates will teach courses that engage and expand upon historical and theoretical approaches to visual and material culture through the study of moving image media. We welcome applicants whose research and pedagogy specialize in diverse methodologies, and/or global approaches to media history and theory as well as scholars interested in independent and experimental practices (including but not limited to the study and production of  augmented/mixed reality, digital, expanded cinema, historic analogue cinema, videogames, virtual media, and video installation).

Applications should demonstrate how the candidate’s work and pedagogy engages and expands the discourse of material and conceptual infrastructures of contemporary, historical moving images, and media. We seek emergent scholars whose work embraces varied media ecologies, multisensorial and embodied practices.

The VMS department course offerings expose the students to critical and theoretical perspectives across/beyond traditional boundaries within the visual arts, photography, moving image, aesthetics, archaeology, cultural studies, materiality, and more. We seek a colleague whose pedagogy and scholarship incorporates both historical and theoretical perspectives in framing the analysis of emergent media in line with our departmental and institutional commitment to augment, nurture, articulate and voice a balanced and wholistic study of materiality and visual imagery.

The candidate should expect to contribute to departmental programs and interdepartmental collaborations across the SMFA and Tufts in general.

Applicants with teaching experience and a strong commitment to teaching excellence are ideal candidates for the position. A promising record of research and scholarship that informs pedagogy and advising is preferred.

Responsibilities include teaching to BFA and MFA students as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the liberal arts and sciences, advising and mentoring students, and fulfilling service responsibilities within the department, school, and university.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree or ABD in Moving Image and Media Studies; Film Studies; Art History; or other related disciplines is required.

At least three years of teaching experience is preferred. We are especially interested in colleagues who can contribute to the excellence of our academic and artistic community, desire to teach in an art school setting, and interact with both studio courses and academic subjects with rigor and fluidity.
