Introduction:

The College of Music at Michigan State University seeks an exceptional Jazz trumpet professor and researcher who will expand and further develop the Jazz Studies Area. Through relevant and responsive creative endeavors and curricular experiences, the candidate will enrich the varied lived experiences of our expansive student body. This full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant/associate/full professor will begin in Fall 2024. The Jazz Studies Area at Michigan State University is committed to encouraging and expanding scholarship and teaching practice in new and innovative areas of Jazz education as well as to developing the practical applications of that scholarship. We seek a creative, dynamic, collaborative colleague with successful teaching experience and Jazz trumpet expertise, a scholarly agenda that is important and innovative, and potential for leadership in our profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach Jazz trumpet to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Perform in the faculty jazz ensemble (Michigan State University Professors of Jazz)
  • Teach Composition & Arranging course.
  • Teach Jazz trumpet studio class.
  • Teach Jazz Improvisation
  • Mentor and guide students in professional activities
  • Recruit and retain Jazz Trumpet students.
  • Engage in meaningful service to the College of Music, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the development of the Jazz program, curriculum content and pedagogy to foster quality student experiences.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in music and/or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience as a private teacher of Jazz trumpet
  • Expert demonstrating and teaching Jazz trumpet techniques
  • Commitment to promoting DEIAB
  • Implement inclusive pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of a diverse learners including underserved and first-generation students
  • Applicant must provide a DEIAB statement-which describes their commitment to a diverse, equitable, inclusive, access, and belonging environment for students, faculty, and staff. Describe how in your work life you address these issues and make these priorities actionable.

Advanced qualifications:

  • Pedagogue in Blues-based improvisation and tradition (Jazz Bebop and Harmonic concepts)
  • Demonstrated Advanced Arranging Techniques and Seventh Scale Concepts in teaching Jazz improvisation
  • Knowledge of Jazz trumpet history
  • Knowledge of Blues and Swing traditions
