Concordia University is recognized as Canada’s top university under the age of 50 and one of the most international universities in the world. Ambitious, innovative, research- and community-engaged, we are celebrated for our commitments to transformative learning, convergent thinking and public impact. Located on two campuses in the heart of cosmopolitan Montreal, we are designing a next generation university that draws on the skills of our faculty and the strengths of our local and global partnerships to prepare our graduates to flourish in the world of tomorrow. The Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University is now seeking to appoint a new Dean.

With nearly 4,000 students enrolled, the Faculty of Fine Arts is the largest comprehensive arts, design, and performance school in Canada. Located in downtown Montreal-a city with 170,000 university students, a vibrant cultural scene, and the most affordable tuition in Canada-Concordia was ranked first in Canada in the top 50 universities under 50, while our Faculty cracked the top 10% of art and design schools globally in 2018. Montreal is a unique Francophone city in North America with a significant Anglophone community, many of whom study with us.

Taking advantage of our place within the rich fabric of a research university and our long history as one of the premiere sites in Canada for the study and creation of the arts and arts-based scholarship, the Faculty of Fine Arts is in a transformative moment. Within our nine departments, pedagogical, conceptual, community-based, theoretical, and material practices thrive. In our university community, live performance, historical research, methodological innovation, technical experimentation, skills-based production, fieldwork, as well as traditional and digital fabrication are equally valued. In addition to curricular advances, the formation of significant research centres and external partnerships in the Faculty of Fine Arts continue to enrich opportunities for faculty and students alike.

The Faculty is seeking a Dean who will bring forward a collaborative vision for the Faculty, one which builds on the considerable successes to date, and which will lead the Faculty into its next phase of development. Working with a supportive and high-caliber faculty, the Dean will have the opportunity to guide the Faculty’s future direction, giving attention to the strategic direction, academic planning and leadership, partnership building, and administrative oversight of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, and acting as a member of Concordia’s senior administration, the Dean will promote innovative approaches to curriculum development and delivery and lead efforts that will enable the Faculty and University to achieve the highest standards in arts education. They will ensure sustainable growth and competitiveness, intensify research output, develop cross-disciplinary programs and further enhance the external stature of the Faculty.

The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts will be an accomplished academic and dynamic leader with a record of building strong teams, promoting and supporting research, fostering academic innovation, managing resources, and advancing multi-disciplinary initiatives. Extensive academic leadership experience will enable the new Dean to relate to a range of internal and external partners and promote excellence, equity, diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff and students. They will possess an open and collegial style, outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills, a creative approach to problem solving, and a strong commitment to academic excellence in research and teaching. The ability to function in both French and English is preferred.
