The Department of Theater and Dance of Emory University seeks to hire two tenure-track faculty members at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. These hires are part of a multi-year initiative to foster equity and to promote the success of our diverse student population. Successful candidates will have an established record of excellence in college or university teaching and an established record or trajectory of research excellence, focusing on the history, criticism, and/or theory of theater or performance. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work addresses one or more of the following: Asian, Latinx, or African American theater; gender in theatrical work; experimental and/or non-hierarchical methods; musical theater. Demonstrated leadership experience or potential is also highly desired.

Emory’s Department of Theater and Dance offers a BA degree in theater and dance, and a BA in playwriting offered jointly with Emory’s Creative Writing Program. The producing arm of the department, Theater Emory, provides a creative research lab for students and faculty as well as opportunities for collaborations with artists from the vibrant Atlanta theater scene, including research opportunities in theatrical translation and adaptation, directing, and dramaturgy. Theater Studies and Playwriting majors are highly motivated students who frequently double-major with contrasting fields of study.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences is a liberal arts college within a top-ranked research university located in the southeastern hub of Atlanta, GA, currently the no. 1 location for filmmaking in the U.S.



  • PhD or other terminal degree in theater studies, drama studies, performance studies, or a related discipline
  • Established or emerging record of excellence in research with publications appropriate for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor
  • Strong record of college or university teaching with demonstrated ability to teach across all levels of the undergraduate curriculum
