The School of Theatre & Dance in the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts at the University of Houston invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Dance beginning fall semester 2023. This is one of two faculty positions in Dance currently open. We encourage applicants to review both. We seek a choreographic artist with strong creative, intellectual, and physical rigor within their research and practice.

The successful candidate will teach studio practice/technique courses and dance theory courses related to their choreography and research.  We welcome candidates from a broad spectrum of contemporary dance practices. Desirable teaching interests include community-based/socially engaged dance practices, hip-hop practices and history, dance technology & digital medias, dance business skills, and creative dance practices.  The Dance Program maintains a unique focus on both the artistry and business of dance; and seeks a candidate with strong organizational and leadership skills, combined with a keen ability to foster collegiality and collaborative initiatives both within our dance program and city.

The successful applicant will have primary research interests in dance and dance studies, and an ability to be responsive through listening, leading, and connecting. Curiosity and interest in the growth of the dance program and community building is fundamental to our process. Responsibilities include a 3/3 teaching load and maintaining an ongoing record of scholarly research and creative work. This is a nine-month, tenure-track position.

This position is part of an Interdisciplinary Cluster Hire program in the studio practice disciplines in the McGovern College of the Arts. The program is one of many initiatives that advances the McGovern College’s priority of achieving an inclusive and innovative climate.

All positions in the program come with annual financial support provided by the Office of the Dean for the first three years during the faculty member's pre-tenure period, for research activities that enhance the faculty member’s research agenda and the mission of the McGovern College.

Applicants must submit a 750-word statement addressing their experience with, interest in, or contributions to diversity and inclusion efforts that impact students, faculty, staff, or the applicant’s field of study; and addressing how they envision demonstrating a similar commitment at the University of Houston. Applicants may address their experience, interest, or contributions in one or more of the following areas: 

  1. Teaching and mentoring a range of artistic expressions that reflect the diversification of the arts disciplines and the need to ensure access to an arts education to as wide a student body as possible. 
  2. Pursuing a sustainable agenda of research and artistic practice dedicated to interdisciplinary cultural studies or to an overall research agenda that supports diversity in the arts disciplines. Areas of secondary interdisciplinary interest that might be reflected in one’s practice include, for example, Comparative Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Diaspora Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Racial Inequality, Social Justice, Sociology, or others. 
  3. Collaborating across the arts disciplines with artists whose specializations or practices differ from your own. 
  4. Developing interdisciplinary curriculum that reflects diversification of the arts disciplines beyond the “Western canon” as codified in the last century.

The Dance Program at the University of Houston emphasizes dance artistry in direct partnership with both practical and innovative applications for the 21st Century. Creative processes in choreography and dance performance are enhanced with training in leadership, arts business, dance technology, dance history and theory, pedagogy, production, teaching artist skills, and community building. We prepare students through a disciplined practice of dance, while guiding them to be critical thinkers and problem solvers in a diverse society.  Our dance faculty and guest artists provide direct connections to the professional community in Houston and beyond. We provide a nurturing environment where students develop sustainable work force skills and curious minds, while defining their individuality through the art of dance. The Dance Program has five full-time dance faculty, five adjunct faculty members, and offers a B.F.A. degree, B.A. degree, Dance minor and approved curriculum for Teaching Certification in Secondary Education in Dance. The University of Houston is responsive to the needs of dual-career couples.



Candidates should have a PhD or MFA in Dance, two or more years of university teaching experience, and experience in mentoring students.
