The Department of Music at Brown University seeks a full-time Lecturer to teach courses in music theory with a focus on ear training, aural skills, and keyboard harmony, and to oversee the department’s Keyboard Lab. The courses are pitched at introductory through advanced levels and function as gateways to the concentration.

Qualified applicants will have an advanced degree in Music (M.M., M.A., D.M.A., Ph.D., Artist Diploma) or equivalent experience with relevant skills in theory, keyboard, and ear training. The initial appointment is for 3 years and can be renewed following an evaluation based on the quality of teaching and service. Lecturer positions at Brown are regular, renewable positions with a possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer and eventually Distinguished Senior Lecturer. Applicants should articulate pedagogical ideas and approaches in line with Brown’s flexible, open-ended music curriculum. We will favor candidates who display innovative methods for teaching musicianship courses at all levels. The candidate will participate in advising and administration by attending and voting at department faculty meetings, advising Music concentrators, conducting independent studies, advising capstones and honors projects, and serving on departmental committees.

The Brown University Department of Music hosts a number of performance ensembles including Orchestra, Chorus, Jazz Band, Wind Symphony, World Music Ensemble, Chamber Music, Electroacoustic Improvisation Ensemble, Old Time String Band, Javanese Gamelan, and Ghanaian Drumming and Dancing. The department has approximately 80 undergraduate concentrators studying performance, composition, music technology, musicology and ethnomusicology, and theory. There are two Ph.D. programs, in Musicology & Ethnomusicology and in Music & Multimedia Composition.
