The Texas Tech University School of Theatre & Dance within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts is accepting applications for a tenure track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre. This position is for a nationally or internationally prominent or emerging artist and scholar with a commitment to helping to guide the musical theatre program to national distinction and nurturing the next generation of musical theatre artists enrolled in our undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will begin service in this full-time position at the beginning of the 2019 fall semester.

Position Requirements: Terminal degree, combination of degree(s) and experience, or equivalent professional experience. Evidence of ability to teach both graduate and undergraduate students at the university level as a vocal instructor and in such courses as musical theatre performance, musical theatre history, musical theatre literature, and other subjects of the candidate’s expertise. Record of professional activity and/or research that demonstrates emerging or established national or international recognition in the field of musical theatre is paramount. Continuing record of professional activity that is relevant to the current and future practice of our craft. Working knowledge of current practice and theory in musical theatre voice and new works development, with a vision towards the future of the discipline, including innovations in the teaching of musical theatre. A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations, and strong evidence of the ability and desire to perform service: responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting, program-building, and commitment to extra-curricular activities in the school, college, university, and community. Commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a collegial team member. Candidates who have clear potential to support scholarship by extramural funding, as appropriate to research specialization, are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally including community engagement. Familiarity with current and cutting-edge practices in musical theatre pedagogy and literature. Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students. Piano proficiency. Extensive experience in teaching related to the position of hire.


Position Description:

The successful candidate would be expected to:

•     Demonstrate ability to teach vocal technique and additional courses related to expertise, such as musical theatre history and literature, continue to engage in nationally/internationally recognized creative/professional practice, and/or scholarship.
•     Embrace new forms of critically engaged disciplinary practice/scholarship in the evolving fields of musical theatre and new works development. Foster courses that emphasize a commitment to social responsibility, advocacy, and engagement as they relate to the field. Seek interdisciplinary opportunities across the university.
•     As a collaborative departmental citizen, actively participate in school, college and university service, including committee work and academic support services such as undergraduate and graduate reviews, thesis and dissertation committee work, and curriculum development; recruitment of students into the program; program review (including implementation and assessment of outcomes); maintaining the school’s accreditation with NAST; and student advising across diverse communities, supervision of student organizations, and participation in sponsored off-campus activities.
•     Participate in the WildWind and/or Marfa Intensive programs, dedicated to new play and new work development during the summer.
•     Mentor the creation of new work.
•     Demonstrate a commitment to collegiality within and outside the school.

The School of Theatre & Dance is NAST accredited and offers the BA in Theatre; BFAs in Acting, Design and Musical Theatre; MA; MFA in Arts Administration. Playwriting, Design, and Performance and Pedagogy; PhD. in Fine Arts with a major in Theatre. A faculty of 26 full-time professors serves approximately 145 undergraduate students and 74 students involved in graduate study. The School has many prominent alumni, including Jaston Williams (Greater Tuna), G.W. Bailey (The Closer, Major Crimes), Jennifer Smith (The Producers), Brad Leland (Friday Night Lights), Randy Cordray (The Office), Barry Corbin (No Country for Old Men). Technical and administrative support includes a total of 9 staff positions. The School’s resources include a new state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open Fall 2019, a burgeoning Equity theatre connected to the school, the nationally-renowned Marfa and WildWind Performance Lab programs and annual participation in the Tennessee Williams Festival.
