The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University announces a search for a scholar of modern art extending across national boundaries and cultural traditions. We are looking for candidates whose work demonstrates the global dimensions and transcontinental movement of art, ideas, and artists in the 18th, 19th, and/or early 20th centuries.   We understand modern art to encompass multiple histories, both canonical and underknown, and to include painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, film, and print culture.  Candidates whose work addresses visual cultures of empire and colonialism are especially encouraged to apply.

A completed Ph.D. is required as is teaching experience at both the introductory and advanced levels. We encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching centers feminist, queer, decolonial and anti-racist approaches to the history of art. The ideal candidate will engage with both traditional and alternative histories of modernity across cultures and nations and contribute to the Department’s ongoing commitment to diversity.

The successful candidate will develop a cycle of introductory level and topical courses for undergraduates and, on the basis of their specific research interests, graduate-level courses and seminars. The ideal applicant would also bring to Stanford a program of current or future research in art history that should attract graduate students of the highest caliber.

The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2023.

Interested candidates should submit a letter detailing the direction of their current research and teaching objectives, a CV, and one recent writing sample online at Stanford | Faculty Positions. Assistant-level and untenured applicants should arrange to have three letters of reference submitted; currently tenured applicants should submit the names of three references. No hard copy applications will be accepted. The deadline for receiving applications is September 1, 2022.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.
