Responsibilities include teaching courses to diverse undergraduates, including the following: Fundamentals of Theatre Design, Theatre Workshop, Costuming, Makeup and Hair, and General Education classes. This position will include designing costumes for theatre and dance productions for the academic year and assist with costuming for our outreach programing: Teatro, Mosaic, and New African Grove Black Theatre. Teaching responsibilities may also include courses from the following: costume history, costume construction, patterning, dyeing, millinery, wigs, property design. Other duties include course and curriculum development, student advisement for Theatre majors, student mentoring for student costume design projects, participation in developing department procedures and
guidelines, involvement in student recruitment, involvement in USITT, ACTF, and ACDA, and committee service at the department, college and university level. Faculty will be expected to continue their creative work and/or professional activities. Tenure and promotion requires faculty to maintain an active record of creative activities, including external professional projects.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds; including adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse student populations;
  • MFA in Costume Design or related discipline by the date of appointment;
  • Evidence of a minimum of two years of effective solo (non-teaching assistant) college teaching experience;
  • Ability to design and construct costumes for both theatre and dance;
  • Expertise in teaching all levels of costume design, make-up and hair, costume construction;
  • Possess skills in cutting, draping, and tailoring, as well as millinery and/or special crafts projects;
  • Demonstrated supervisory and collaborative abilities; ability to adhere to production timeline;
  • Strong collaboration skills with the directors, choreographers, and other members of the design team a must;
  • Ability to teach introductory theatre classes; and
  • Evidence of an active performance record or equivalent professional experience including a knowledge of multicultural theatre.

Preferred /Desired Qualifications

  • MFA/PhD in Costume Design and Technology;
  • A demonstrated record of excellent teaching and designing at the college/university level, community-based theatre, including proficiency in instructing undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, through the adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse populations;
  • Academic or Professional experience as costume designer including diverse or multicultural productions;
  • Demonstrated record of excellent teaching in the areas of costume design, make-up and hair, costume construction, costume history;
  • Possess skills in cutting, draping, and tailoring, as well as millinery and/or special crafts projects;
  • Experience in teaching introductory theatre classes and teaching online classes; and
  • Demonstrated experience in department/college/university service.
