UNT is an R1 research university in Denton, Texas, which is in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The Metroplex, as this area is known, is the most populous metropolitan area in Texas and in the South, and the fourth largest metropolitan area in the U.S. The Denton campus, as the flagship research campus of the UNT System, has over 42,000 students including more than 8,000 graduate students. The university holds the distinction of being designated by the US Department of Interior as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI). HSIs and MSIs are unique both in their missions and in their day-to-day operations, as well in the composition of their administrative leadership. The Department of Media Arts houses two undergraduate majors—a BA in Media Arts and a BA in Converged Broadcast Media—as well as four undergraduate certificates: Television News Producing, Media Management, Digital Media Studies, and Spanish Language Media. The department also offers a Master of Arts degree in Media Arts and an MFA in Documentary Production and Studies. Located within the thriving Dallas-Fort Worth television market (currently ranked 5th in the U.S.) the department frequently hosts professionals who serve as guest speakers and adjunct professors. The location within the DFW market offers numerous internship and part-time employment opportunities while students are pursuing their degrees. With more than 1300 undergraduate students, we are one of the largest and most active programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students have the opportunity to work for our local television news station, ntTV, or for the radio station, KNTU.
